I like select O speed Ford,s
Is there anything wrong with the tranny, and is it a pain to redo the select O shift,
Ive heard horror stories about them like stay away from them and their junk,
they cant be THAT BAD?
These tractor,s are robust and strong, So I cant reason why people would degrade the tranny?
Other than not shifting it right,or hurrying it
to shift into the next gear?

I have 4 original SOS tractors- 3 are 1959 and 1 1962. Also have a 1964 DDC 4000 industrial. With minimal maint keeping the oil changed etc they have been almost bullet proof for me in spite of lots of hot California central valley weather, loader work, and a 6ft Howard Rotovator on a 59 871. All of them have power steering and I have a lot more problems keeping the power steering from leaking than I have ever had from the SOS.

Select-O-Speed Fords in reply to kirk in ks,l, 07-19-2006 14:06:11
They're not that bad if they've been taken care of and not abused. I have two that are in excellent shape. Some of the very early ORC models earned them the horror stories. The later DDC models sre fantastic transmissions.

I don't agree that they're any more costly to repair than a gear unit in the event they do have problems. And parts for all these old Fords are getting harder to find. Just try to get a new shift tower spring for a 5 speed!

Besides which, if you do any roading at all, you'll have time to get home and milk the cows with an SOS before the others arrive.

Sorry! lightning strike took my internet out for a few days. If you have the original setup you have the DDC.

Larry,
I am looking at a 1970-74 Ford 3000 with a sos. Will I have trouble getting the transmission repaired or replace if it goes out. How do I tell if its a ddc

Don't know aboutthat speed thing Larry. I think I would put my 841 up to a race with your SOS tractor. I have been clocked at 45 MPH once on it. I'll never do it again because the steering isn't as tight as it once was but to me at least that was moveing on for a tractor with a front end loader on it to boot.

Yes, but you have a Sherman. :-) I'd say the vast majority of them don't.

I figured you might have remember that it has a sherman LOL. I know in this area the SOS is few and far between. Part of that is because they got junked when the tranny went bad and part of it was the fact they where not all that popular in this area.

Take a look at my "unbelievable" post just below yours. That is why the trans gets the reputation.

For the most part they are not as trouble free as a 4 spped or 5 speed tranny or any of the other gear type trannys. Also cost to fix/rebuild them is higher can cost up around $2500 to rebuild one. Guess its sort of like an automatic in a car or truck. Some people just love them others don't. My self I like to shift gears in my cars/trucks/tractor

I have a Ford 3400 Industrial with a 10 spd.Select-O-Shift, a Ford 3400 Ind. w/loader and 4x4 shuttle trans, a Ford 515 Ind. Utility w/loader and 8x2 trans, and a J.D. 2010 8x2 trans. And for my money the SOS is by far the best unit, it has been flawless and has never needed any repairs and has all the benifits of a tourqe amplifier, fully syncronized, shift on the fly, and shuttle trans in one unit. On the other hand the J.D. is on its third clutch and has had its input shaft replaced once, the 515 is in need of a clutch replacement, and the 3400 w/loader has had its trans repaired and clutch replaced before I bought it. just my opinion John
