What is the best way of dealing with a cylinder rod that has the Chrome wearing off? Should I re-chrome it? I have a few cylinders that leak a little and want to rebuild them. I can get seal kits but what should I do with the rod? Thanks for your time.
Jerry

I just took mine in to a local shop for a rebuild on my 640. I will let you know how much they charge if you like to give you a ball park figure. I am restoring my 1957 Ford 640 so I got a thing about being original. Some people figure what the heck, if it works who cares about being orignal. But I do..... Good luck. Dennis

Thanks for the Reply Dennis'640. I feel the same as you trying to keep it as original as I can. I'm always looking for good original parts it is missig. What I have is a 1968 4500 TBL that works and runs great since I bought it. Since it is an industrial equipment you can imagine that anyone has jumped on this tractor and abused it. There are little things on it that was just thrown on it to get it working again. All the serial numbers match so I feel it is my duty to do what I can to get it back to it's prime.

For the price of a re-chrome or a re-rod you can get a new cylinder. Unless it is real deep pitting, I would just re-seal and leave it at that. jb

Thanks for your reply john_bud. I might just do that. There is no real pitting. Just looks like the chrome flaked off.

I once took some cylinders from a 19-97 loader with worn-off chrome to a local hydraulic shop to inquire about rechroming. They said they don't rechrome but rather build new rods from rod stock. This usually involves machining the inside end and welding the old outside end onto the new cylinder rod. This operation can be done at home for people with a lathe and a welder. Raw rod stock can usually be had at a local hydraulics place or by mail order from a place such as Bailey (www.baileynet.com). In my case rather than do this I replaced my cylinders with modern generic cylinders, available from Bailey, Surplus Center, and others. Of course there may be places where rechroming is available.

Thanks Andy for your reply. Your information is very useful. This is why I asked on this forum! A person can learn about many options. I never would have thought about this. Thanks again for the information.
