I have put my 1962 861D with P.S.up on blocks and going through it top to bottom.I paid $3,000 for it six years ago .It came with a 5' brush hog,two bot plow, rear dump bucket and a set of cultivators.Tractor was used and abused for years and I continued the cycle as I cleared my land and intended for it to be a throw away after I was done. When I priced a new 45 hp tractor I decided to put the money into ole Betsy and give her a second lease on life as she has never failed me.She doesn't smoke a bit and I did the clutch when I replaced the ring gear on the flywheel two years ago.$2,000 now invested (new tires and wheels were a big chunk)I am about done except for the Sheet metal.I have found in many places blue paint under the grey and red.Including tough to get to places like under the regulator where there is nothing but blue.I know not all of her is original yet it is hard to believe some one got to these places and painted it ford blue.Is it possible that this old girl was blue from the factory?I have loved every minute of this project (well not every minute)and I am not one bit sorry I made the decission to give her a second life.

You say it's a 1962? That was the last year of the x01 series and also the first year of the blue Fords. It's interesting to consider that maybe the last of the x01's were painted blue as part of the changeover. I don't have any facts to support either side of that argument.

Just out of curiosity, what is your serial number? My chart of numbers shows that the 1962 production of x01 tractors ceased in July with s/n 171247. I've never seen a "final" s/n listed that hasn't been proven wrong by someone owning a tractor with a s/n higher than the supposed "last" number in the chart.

Jim I have the 861D with an Elenco with the serial # 171401 build late July 1962, It is and always was red and gray. The blue under JustaJr tractor might be from an earlier paint job that the painter had the tractor tore clear down.

Ha! I knew if I posted that "final" serial number as shown in my Ford parts manual (published by Ford) that someone would immediately prove it wrong. It makes you wonder where Ford gets their information. Thanks for the confirmation.

Okay, I have 171338 that's suppose to be a '64 4000. Did they continue the 800's serial numbers thru the early 4000's? bjr

My understanding is that they continued to use up 'leftover' x01 parts (sheetmetal, etc.) as they did a running switch to the 2000/4000 series. As they are mechanincaly the same, it made little difference at the time. Just makes it more interesting for people like us, years later.
