hi

A week ago I got a 1973 Ford 3000 with backhoe and loader. After two days the fan belt broke because the alternator pulley does not line up with the engine pulleys and belt ran crooked.

With the front mounted pump shaft extending from the engine crank pulley how do I put a new belt on the crank pulley and around the shaft..... do I need to remove the hyd pump and shaft or is there an easier way to put a new belt on. What is best way to remove spline shaft and hyd pump if I need to get clearance (what comes Apart).

Since the alternator pulley does not line up with the engine pulleys I need to fig a way to move alt forward 1/4 inch for better alignment and to not wear belt out.

thanks for your help

I'm not familiar with yours; my 3500 pump shaft has a u-joint attached to the crank-pulley that, when I unbolt it from the pulley, there's just room to work a belt past it. It's a pain to do, so I carry one of those clip together, one-size-fits-all belts in case I lose one in the woods. They make those a lot better than they used to, we use them in some really tough applications at the mill.
So far I've not had to put one on mine, but I did give one to one of the bushhoggers a few years ago. Good luck, Wm
Heres a look at the u-joint, past the blade, pump out of top of the picture.

You should be able to unbolt the pump and then pull it back just enough to slip the belp past the shaft. On some tractors you can do this and on others you will also need to unbolt the shaft at the pump and pul the pump to the side to get the room, all depends on how the pump is mounted. As far as the alterntor and the 1/4 inch just put a few washer in to make it line up as it should

When you do get the pump off, put 1 each of a new spare tied up aginst the front of the engine, This way if a belt breaks you can just install the new belt in a short time say if you were on the job. Any tractor I have ever had with a front pump I put the extra belts there. Some I never need used others it was a job saver. For the small amount of cost it WELL worth it in the field
