Just wondering if anyone has replaced their stock filter setup(NAA,600,800) with a K&N filter?

Any reasons why it would be a bad idea?

Okay, Oil Bath Good, Paper Element Bad in reply to MarkinWI, 08-01-2006 19:02:36
I got it. Now I need to rebuild or put proper steel mesh in housing. I have two different styles of steel material in mine. One is a steel mesh the other is steel wool stuff. I don't know if this is the right amount or the proper size of mess. How do you determine what's proper media in the ford rectangular box oil bath air cleaner. Where do I get the correct mesh media? bjr

guys... remember.. the ford system does a great job of speeding up and then slowing down the air.. this has the effect of making all the dust go to the outside and then dropping out... by using the dyson vaccum cleaner principle, the fords and others where doing that back in the 1930s.... design to take days of dust bowl depression dirt and go for months on end were a regular filter would stop up in hours, these filteres will go for months... and allow the use to clean and refresh them without special 20 dollar refresh kits...

if you only run your tractor on a quarter mile asphalt strip once a month,, go with the cotton filter... otherwise... what the heck are you thinking....

I wouldn't put a K&N filter on a tractor. IT may be OK on a high performance car engine where it never really see's any dirt. However, on your tractor, it will see a lot of dirt.... and the purpose of the filter is to catch the dirt, not let it through. From my point of view, if you are going to get higher airflow through a small filter, like K&N claims, then you are giving up something. That would be filtering capacity and protection. So, definitely NO, I would not put a K&N filter on a tractor. Most tractors are sitting in dust all the time.
That said, I see nothing wrong with dual element cylindrical air filters from AirMaze or Donaldson, and various others. Just SIZE the filter for the airflow you need for the engine, or you will have problems. Even oversize it some. That won't hurt; it'll just take more space. These filters are quite capable, and easy to service. They can either be washed out, or blown from the inside with low pressure air. Reuse and reuse so long as they don't develop a hole. I prefer them over oil bath units.... But to each their own.

I tried K&N filters back in the late "70s and I would not even put one on a push mower. They let way to much dirt through. Just my $.02

Your oem oil bath air filter is a very efficient unit at filtering.. offers better air flow characteristics even after absorbing lots of crud.. unlike paper media filters. as others stated.. it also actually filters 'better'..

It's your engine though.. run it however you wish.. I'm sure the parts houses don't mind at all...

To answer your question, No, haven't done that.

But, I did think about it and was considering going to a dual element set up like my Kubota has. I would NOT do a K&N - contrary to their advertisement, - they don't do a good job stopping grit. (Sorry K&N fans!) The oil bath does do a very good job keeping the air clean.

If you do find a good way of putting a dual element set up in for an old ford, please let us know!

Probably can be done but my self I wouldn't. I believe the good old oil bath type does a better job of filtering then any of the new paper type or any other type could. I figure with all the dust etc that a tractor sees the oil catches more of it then any other type could. Just my oppion
