Got a 1966 4000 with a select o speed that has never been torn down. As an automotive mechanic in a dealership a few years ago, we used to add trans seal softener to the fluid to keep seals limbered up on trannys that were getting some miles on them. Wondered what you guys think about adding this stuff to an sos?

I would not recommend this,B. Nor is it likely necessary. The later model S-O-S transmissions are pretty much bullet proof. This is especially true of the 65 and later because they have oil coolers and externally accessable oil filters.

The early models had no oil cooler and the filter, which was clearly an after thought, is underneath the top cover and time consuming to change. Many owners do not even know that there is one inside. As a result, it was often ignored. Finally it is on the discharge line rather than the pump input.

Knowing what happens when you put the wrong stuff in an S-O-S trans. I'd not recommend trying it.
