most common problem is a aux hyd valve left in the ON position...this will cause it to heat up fast.... and is very easy to do as how the levers are designed.... check the position very carefully of each lever... and if the linkage is out of adjustment, check it even closer... so that each is in the OFF,, not FLOAT or UP or DOWN.. but OFF....

Does the tractor seem to be laboring? Does it stop laboring if you lift the 3-point or activate a remote cylinder?
It is possible that there is a relief valve open. That would have a cause. If there's just dirt in the valve, you would notice improper system operation, and I doubt there would be much heat. However, if there is an unload valve stuck, and the system can't unload it's oil flow to sump, then the relief valves will be dumping oil at system pressure, and that will build heat quickly.
It is also possible that the oil cooler pressure relief valve is stuck, and that oil is getting dumped rather than sent to the cooler... but that's a long shot. Keep in mind that "hot" is a relative term when talking about that tractor. You would not keep your hand anywhere on a housing on that tractor, and that would still be quite normal in my thinking. They get quite hot. I don't know what you would say in terms of degrees, but definitely hot. HTH.

Make sure the relief valve isn't stuck open and that there are no big leaks between the pump and the reservoir. Running hot is usually caused by recirculating hydraulic fluid through the pump from some sort of an internal leak like a stuck open relief valve or a major leak somewhere else. The work put into the pump that isn't put into flow and pressure rise shows up as heat, which raises the fluid temperature. If a pump is 70% effiecient, then 30% of the power will show up as heat.

Check to make sure that one of the remotes is not stuck on, that will heat things up pretty fast. Otherwise, make sure the cooler and radiator are clean and that it has plenty of fluid and good filters. Good luck

What about the cooler valve?
We're rebuilding a 7700 transmission here and see the cooler valve located above the pump, how does it work? From what I can make out the oil supply from the hitch valve/cylinder flows out to this valve - maintains a bit of back pressure before it flows on to the cooler and returns to the dual power pack to lube it..... am I right?

Do these things ever jam with dirt?
