I think I may need more of the mesh for the oil bath air cleaner. The tractor is a '64 4000 172D SoS transmission. The previous owner put steel wool in it. It's a recangular style filter box. Where can I get the correct mesh media? bjr

I do not think that the 4000 1964 would have the box type air cleaner. The diesels that I have seen have an air cleaner bolted to the side of the hood. The mesh is in the upper part and an oil cup clamps to the bottom. This may have been an option. In my area all of the 4000 has the cleaner that I have described.

There is some on ebay right now, go to Business/Industrial and type in air cleaner. The price is around 12.00 dollars US but the shipping seems to me high, very high. They might give you a break on it though but you will have to ask them.
Good Luck, Kent

Some of the 8N gurus used about a dozen brass brillo pads as a replacement for the mesh. You can buy them at your local grocer. Don't use fine mesh steel wool.

Hi bjr,

Most restaurant supply stores sell stainless steel wool that is used as a pot scrubber. This is much coarser than the regular steel wool and it will not rust. I have never used it in an air cleaner, but I am sure it would be OK. I have used it to pack around pipes and wires going into houses and barns, to keep mice out.
