3000 tractor

I have a 3000 diesel with live pto. As I was cutting a field with a 6' Woods mower through dash-high heavy weeds, I noticed that the PTO shaft started to bog down, it slowed down, and then stopped turning, although the tractor drive clutch still worked strong. I depreseed the clutch half way and the tractor stopped, and the PTO shaft started to slowly spin again. If I dropped down a few gears this didn't happen as bad. The Woods mower has a slip clutch and I am pretty sure that the PTO clutch, and not the slip clutch on the mower was slipping. The clutch pedal is properly adjusted for play. Does this sound like my PTO clutch is going? Any way that I can test this to see what the problem is? It seems to me that the drive clutch would go out way before the PTO clutch. Thanks.

Yes, it does sound like the PTO clutch is on its way out. Usually once you notice slippage they will not last much longer because the slippage overheats the clutch spring(s) causing rapid failure. It is not uncommon for the PTO clutch to fail before the drive clutch.

You need to verify that it is indeed the PTO clutch and not the mower slip clutch before replacing the clutch. This can be done visually by watching the PTO shaft in front of the slip clutch.

Good luck.
