I recently purchased a Ford 861 Tractor. The manual says use type "A" automatic transmission fluid in the power steering pump. The parts stores I've looked at no longer sell type "A" transmission fluid. What type fluid should I use? Also should I use a nondetergent motor oil in the engine? Thank you.

Never heard of a Ford manual calling for tranny fluid in anything....

The power steering pumps are kinda low pressure, whatever flows through the filter & not out the seals likely will work from the mentioned products. :)

I use whatever hyd/tran fluid I use for everything, which tends to be 134 compatable.

There is some confusion on what PS fluid to use. In the books I have 1 of 4 says to use power steering fluid, the other three say to use the M2C41 fluid which is now the 134 class fluid. It's much thicker than PS fluid!

I've been useing Dexron in my 841 for 20 plus years and it has work just fine. As far as engine oil I wouldn't use a nondetregent oil in it. I use 40W oil in all my tractors in the summer and 30W in some of them in the winter but only the ones I ue in the winter the other ones I don't worry about since I don't use them when its cold
