The model numbers indicate I have a 540-1000 and ground speed PTO. I don't know how to change the speeds. I pull out on the cable control handle and there seems to only one speed. How do I get the other speeds. bjr

Update on PTO Speeds in reply to bjr, 08-23-2006 06:41:22
Well, apparently the transmission has been changed because the tractor has only one speed 540, I beleive. I see on the case in front of the inching pedal where the lever for two speed would go. It has 540-N-1000 marked, but no lever and the shaft hole has a soft plug in it. The PTO engages in nuetral so I that mean no ground speed either. Thanks to everyone for your help. bjr

Go read your earlier post about this. I put a reply on it yesterday or the day before.

Its also possible that you do not have the original SOS transmission and what you have is a single speed PTO. My dad has a 1960-61 801 with a blue SOS transmission with 540-1000 PTO and it has the lever on the left side ahead of the inching pedal. He transplanted this into his 801 to get rid of the 5,6 & 9 coast gears. It could be that somewhere along the line the 540-1000 was pulled and replaced with the single speed PTO transmission. Another one of his 801s came from the factory with a repainted Gold SOS transmission, stanger things have happened.

I'm going to have to tell you this from memory, since I haven't owned a select-o-speed in several years, and no longer have an owners manual for one. (All this is in the owners manual if you have one. If you don't, I'd recomend buying one. About $15) There is (should be) a lever on the left side of the transmission with 3 positions, marked 540, 1000, and ground. (maybe just "G"?) This lever has to be moved to the appropriate setting. You also need to change to the 21-spline shaft for 1000 rpm.

When I preping the chassis for painting I needle scaled the diff. and transmission housing. So I got pretty familiar with the controls mounted there. There's nothing on the left side. On the right is a lever that say draft on it, assuming it's for the draft hydraulics. I was wondering if what I have is a single speed, 540, I hope as my tiller runs 540. From your experience, are the model numbers stamp on the left pad above the starter always accurate or can there be discreptancies there. My number is 40316. This is newly aquired tractor and I'm just getting functions operating one item at a time. bjr

My experiences have been that the stamps are accurate, but I've heard of inaccurate ones. I found a couple pictures of selectospeeds in a service manual that I have - there should be 2 levers on the left side of the trans if you have a 2-speed pto: one in front of the inching pedal (540/1000 selector) and one near the rear of the trans housing (ground speed shift lever - on or off) If you have a 6-spline shaft, you have 540 pto, or possably ground speed. Try engaging it in neutral; if the pto turns, it's not ground speed.

4 makes it a pre 3-68 4000
03 .. I don't have a listing for 03 for chassie type..
1 diesel
6 independent 540/1000 pto

Perhaps when you change the shafts to the 540/1000 the 1000 is driven off a different gear set and thus the speed difference.
