I have a 172D engine with the Stanadyne DB4, I think pump,it's a DB something anyways. It goes from Idle to full power in only about 1/2 in. movement of the lever on the dash, makes it hard to get intermediate speeds. The lever on the pump is the same in that a slight movement is all it takes to go from idle to full fuel. Is this normal for this pump or is there an adjustment to get more travel to get a little more control on it?

I have a 172 Diesel with that same pump. I think the other guys are right about the governor ring. I have to pull the lever 3 to 4 inches to go from idle to about 2000 rpm. It is very easy to control the speed. I am sure you have a pump issue. B. Jones

Yep! Your governor retainer ring is shot. You can get a kit for around 30 bucks (or could a little over a vear ago at my closest diesel shop) that will contain all seals and the governor ring. Of course for another 40 or 50 you can upgrade to the new style governor. The kicker is that unless you're really good at mechanics, you better let someone that knows what they're doing work on your injection pump. It'll cost better than 500 at a pump shop, but it'll cost that if you screw it up, too!

I'm the last fellow hear to tell-- but sounds bad. does it govern, that is if you set it at a slower speed and put a load on it, will the governer give it more power or does it just kill? Thats what mine (DBO pump???) was doing. I think the weights were sticking. As mentioned here many times, some of these pumps had a plastic weight retainer that comes apart. There are pople here that know these pumps in every detail.

It seems to take a load okay. Just kinda a small window of lever movement from idle to high RPM. bjr

That movement is free travel and is explained in the manual for adjusting the pump for high and low idle. I think it is proable normal. I had the electric selonoid installed in my pump cost $100 at the injection shop. This did away with the mechinical stop and turning the key off will kill it. My lever will move about two inchs before it accelrates to the governed speed.

It does have the electric shut down in reply to Hurley J. D., 08-26-2006 20:06:22
Maybe what I seeing is okay then. It has the electric shut down. Other than the long free play in the lever everything else is okay. bjr
