A friend of mine had this tractor burn up last week. The engine started on fire and the batteries leaked all over the injector pump side of the engine. I was going to offer his insurance company $1000 to $1500 to purchase it. I needs a paint, sediment bowl, fuel shut off cable, radiator, grille, injector pump and lines, starter, wiring harness, battery, and belts. It may need valve springs too.

Are any of these parts spendy or hard to find?

No, should all be easy to get, some probably even in stock at your local NH dealer. Also figure on a valve cover gasket and possably a head gasket. We went through this about 18 years ago with our 7000. Plan on working on it several times after you think everything is 'done'. A real pain, but can be worth it. We still have the 7000, and it has over 12,000 hours on it now. Unless it was really torched, you shouldn't need the valve springs.

No, the parts will not be hard to find. The 4000 is well supported. Parts can be had through NewHolland or various other sources including this site.
I would do the wiring myself rather than buy a harness. It's really only a few wires anyway; wrap them in black tape and it's goood to go. It also gives you a chance to drop a few in-line fuses in there rather than the lack of any fusing or a fusible link....
Keep in mind that a good used pump will cost you ~500. A battery ~150. A rad probably ~200. A starter ~300, and probably a couple hundred in cables, connections and wire. The fuel lines are better made yourself if you have the tools, exept the injector lines. I would buy them as they're a little more critical. I think I'd start the insurance boys off at a little more than 10 cents a pound (5500 # tractor), and see where it goes. It's only haggeling anyway, not a tender. You can always go up. You'll never go down, and there's often more that needs doing than you might at first realise. It still sounds like a very good canidate to fix though. Remember that when it's fixed, it's still only a $5000 tractor if it's in good working order. Good luck.

One of my local dealers said the 1974 utility 4000 is only worth about $2500 in the southern minnesota area.

He said a few years ago they were a hot item, but now they are not very popular.
