Wade,

I have a 4140 HD tractor with a 4 speed / Sherman combo. If you swap in a 4 speed, you had better get a sherman combo transmission to go along with it. Otherwize you will be kicking yourself every time you use the loader. The 1st gear in the standard 4sp is WAY too fast for most loader work. The 4sp with sherman in underdrive is still too quick when powering into a pile full of mixed shale, sand and gravel. Then again, it could be my technique...

I would fix the SOS, or at least get quotes on what it will take to fix it. I have no direct repair experience with the SOS, but did watch them at the Ford show take one apart. A little more complex than an automatic trans, but still do able by the average mechanic with some smarts and a good set of books. And lots of guys here do have direct experience and can help if you hit any snags.

After you know how much it is to fix, you can sell the 4 speed to cover the cost.

I had same symptoms on early on a recently purcha in reply to WadeM, 09-03-2006 16:44:16
When I got the newly aquired 4000D home it wouldn't move. Symptoms where the same and it was the torque limiting clutch. It had sheared of the rivets. Got a used replacement from Draper Tractor Parts here in WA state. Several different splines and diameters. I took pictures along with dimensions when placed order by email. Don't give up on the SOS. I really like mine. bjr

No fluid moving? Pump or torque clutch on flywheel.

You may find them salvage. I have a used torque clutch disc here. The last I checked they were also available from Ford (CNH) but were pricey.

Thanks Larry, I have on hand a manual trans out of a 801. In your oppinion would it be better to fix the sos or switch trans. I prefer to fix the sos. Thanks

You're asking the wrong person that question. I'm an SOS fanatic. I'd never take a manual tranny, when I could have an SOS. Of course, if the SOS problem is major, there comes a point at which it may not be cost efective to repair it.
