On my 231 can I short the check chains to keep my 3pt from swaying? Or is the geometry not right, and I should add the outside stabilizer bars?

Thanks
Rick

Please Rick, Don't shorten the chains. Do add
proper stabilizer bars-do two-they will last forever. Good luck with the 231. Chuck

Chuck,

I'm not going to cut the chains. Each end has a half link, with a hitch/cotter pin in it. I figured you could just move the half link up the chain a link or two. But figured it might bind since the length is shorter than the lower arms.

I will probably use chains with turnbuckles instead of the bars. Easier to adjust in my experience.

Rick

If you've got to go buying a stabilizer kit, I would suggest that you look at the square telescopic type from the 30 series tractors, like the 3930. There's no bars to fight with, and no seized turnbuckles to free all the time.... and they will fit right in place. Pure simple and easy. They will probably cost a few bucks more though.... If the NH pricing is scary, ask them to price it through Sparex. I found their prices to be about 1/2 what NH was on a set of stabilizers I got for my 7710. Good luck.

Rod,
You are right on about the 3930 links. I have a 98 3930 and those telescoping links and lower arms are the best I've owned.

I am sure the NH prices will scare me, so I'll look at the Sparex. I rescued this 231 from the dead, but its beginning to grow on me though. Nice and handy little tractor.

Got a picture of the telescoping bars? I'm not familar with what your talking about. I got the standard issue Speeco stuff outside flatbar stuff. I have to climb under tractor remove pin and reposition bars on this style. The telescoping sounds earier and would like a picture or description. bjr

URRRRr. They don't want me helping Sparex I guess.
Google Sparex. Go to the Sparexusa site, under Ford65+, and stabilizer parts. There is a parts diagram on page 11. HTH.
