1965 to 1968 Ford 4000 diesel 3cyl. 8 speed

Does anyone know what the cotter pin sticking out of the bottom of the transmission do? I was filling my transmission with oil when I noticed oil dripping from this cotter pin.

After I removed the overflow plug and drained about a pint of transmision oil it stopped dripping. I have it all back together and all seems fine now.
Thanks for the help.

I'm sure you wouldn't do this but someone told me he used regular motor oil ('for gasoline engines') in his diesel tractor. He also commented that he was losing a lot of oil out the rear main seal. I advised him that what he was using is not designed to meet the requirements of diesel engines. After changing to diesel motor oil, he told me that the oil loss had dropped to insignificant.

The hole is a oil drain for the clutch area.
The cotter pin keeps the hole from pluging with dirt and oil.
If you see oil driping you have a rear main engine seal or a trans input shaft seal leaking.

Good thing it's in there cause you gotta split the tractor to replace it.

just to replace the cotter! Surely you jest! I could crawl under and clean the hole many times before splitting a tractor just to replace a weep hole cotter.

Why certainly I jest. A cotter pin whose sole purpose in life is to occupy space so crud can't go there? Yet the only way to replace it?
I did not think LOL was even needed.
