Hi all. I am looking at buying a Ford tractor to do haying (cutting/raking/ baling) and with a front end loader. I've narrowed it down to a 5610 or a 6600. Any suggestions on which might be better? Or warnings about what to look out for on either model? Thanks. Alan

Alan, both are descendants of the 5000 and are in the family of the best Ford tractors ever built.

The 5610 has a 256 cid 67 PTO HP engine. First built in 1981 and is still being manufactured in Mexico. It has higher flow hydraulics: 9 gallons per minute (16 gpm if equipped with an auxiliary engine mounted pump). Trailed implement hydraulics are closed center.

The 6600 1975 to 1977 versions have a 256 CID 67 HP engine. The 78 to 80 versions have a 268 CID 77 HP engine. Hydraulics are open center, about 7 gallons per minute flow.

Watch for block (cylinder wall) perforation from coolant cavitation) if the cooling system has not been maintained with diesel antifreeze. Cehck for coolant in oil (milky color) or oil in coolant. Check for a compression leak into the coolant.

Check if oil in injection pump has been changed regularly. If not injection pump will be way overfull and oil will be diluted with fuel. A little dilution is normal.

I forgot to mention that both tractors have about 5000 hours on them. Anything to worry about there? Thanks. Alan

We have a 6600 and like it very much: however it's working on it's third centre steering arm. I'd think the 5610 would be hydrostatic steering? Now we're running 18.4x34 and 10.00 16's with a loader fulltime so we don't complain much about steering parts.
