just purchased what i think is a 971D tractor.Diesel engine sos and a pto. tractor has extra gear setup under rear axle giving higher ground clearance. Waiting for manual in mail. looking for information: Unable to read serial number or model number. is this a 971D? 6or 12 volt? has a wide front end. any other way to tell year, etc. looks like a long restorating winter--yipee!

The model and serial is on the flat on the bellhousing under the air cleaner and behind the starter if you don't already know. Some of these diesels had a bad habit of leaking battery acid and corroding the numbers away. Is this why you can't read it?

Others have given you info that is anywhere from right to half right to totally wrong. Without more info, you may have anything from a 971 or 981 to an early 4000 row crop. All of these early Ford diesels do have 12 volt negative ground systems.

I am thinking about purchasing a 971 sos diesel.
Would you recommend this model tractor?
I have not been able to find a lot of information on this model. Can you get parts for it?

Thanks,

Jim

All diesels were 12 volt. If it is an early 4000 row crop, the serial number is on the right side near the hyd pump. A lot of SOS transmission were changed out and may not have a serial number.

Say what? I have both late '62 and mid '65 built 4 cylinder early 4000s. Their model/serial is on the left side of the bell housing just like the 00 and 01 series are.

All I know is that I have one book that says it is on the right side for early 4000's. That's where mine is stamped.

Maybe I should have asked what you're calling an early 4000! Is yours a 4 cylinder or a 3 cylinder? If it's a 3 cylinder, it is a late 4000. If it's a four cylinder and has the serial where you say it is, I want to see pictures of it. Likewise, if it's a 4 cylinder, I want to know the name of the book and the page that you are referring to.

With a diesel engine and SOS trans it would have to be either a 971-D or 981-D. The difference between the two is the 971 has a single speed pto and the 981 has a dual speed pto.

The SOS tranny was introduced in 1959 so your tractor is no older than that. The diesel models often have no serial number because it's stamped in a location where a leaking battery will erase the numbers over 40 or 50 years.

You might try looking for date codes on the rear axles or on the radiator. For now I can confidently say your tractor was built between 1959 and 1962.

Are you sure your looking in the right place for the serial number?? It behind the starter on the bell houseing, on a flat spot. You will need to clean the area real good with carb cleaner etc. to be able to see it. As far as 6 or 12 volt I'm not sure but I think it would be 12 volt because its a diesel. And yes from what you say since it has a sos tranny its a 971 if it fact its a 901 series tractor.
