Ford NAA vs 600 series

I purchased this tractor from a friend of a friend last weekend and have been researching it ever since. The seller was adamant that it was a 1961 Ford 600 series 640/641 model. He had what he stated was the original owners manual that came with the tractor. It was for a Ford NAA. The tractor is in fair condition. It starts easily and runs well with a little smoke on the #1,2 and 3 cylinders, but has a bad piston or rings in the #4 cylinder. The rest of the tractor is mechanicly sound and the body is in fair to good condition with very little rust and very few dents. I have found the seriel number on it, by using the Vintage Ford Tractor web sites instructions. It is; NAA75408 with a diamond suffix. This traces back to a '53/'54 NAA.

Here's my problem. I used the Vintage Ford Tractor web site that compares the NAA to the 600 series and there are two discrepancies.

1) The grill cover that the web page designated to the 600 series in on this tractor. (with the oblong shaped hole)

2) The left side combination foot rest/tool box is not on this tractor.

The only other descriptional difference I can tell also is that the seller was adamant that the grill emblem was that of a 600 series. (it is missing now)

So.... Do I base my research and restoration on the seriel number for the NAA. Or do I go by the 600 series characteristics on the body of the tractor and the sellers word.

As a foot note, I've looked over the mounting nuts and bolts of the body and their integrity appears not to have be broken. They appear to be the orignal nuts and bolts. Unless they have been painted over.

Any comments ould be appreciated.

The other comments have given you good hints. Here's a couple more:
1. Check the rear axle trumpets for date codes. They should be on the forward facing surface. Post what you find and we may be able to pin it down further.
2. Clean the exterior of the carb. The hundred series (600/800) had date codes stamped on the brass tag. I don't know about the NAA.
3. Open the hood cover and clean the top of the radiator. Again, the hundred series should have a date (month and year) stamped into the top of the radiator.

A grille would be easy to swap. I'd lean more toward looking at the hydraulic lines and rear axle hubs as was mentioned by others.

If there are big nuts in the center of the rear wheels, on the end of the axle, it is an NAA

Thanks for all of your comments. I've speculated, after doing more research, that the body of a '61 600 series may have been put on to a '53 NAA tractor and sold as a newer tractor. The seller stated that the tractor was bought when he was a small boy in the early '60's, by his farther. It was used over the next 30 or so years by this family for light farming and hay cutting and bailing.

As I said before it is mechanicaly sound, except for the #4 cylinder, and complete down to what appears to be a standard brush guard. None of the guages work and the push start button has been replaced by a key start.

I plan to have the engine completely over hauled inside and replace a leaking radiator. From there I will probably not paint it until I'm ready to resell it or retire it.

Check the hydraulic lines off of the pump as well... if you study the web page you spoke of, it shows the NAA has two individual steel hydraulic lines, where the 600 series has a piece the covers and protects the lines to where it looks like one....

Dave,
It has the two seperate hydrolic lines exposed on the right side of the tractor.

Well, as you know, the serial is definitely for an NAA. I have both an NAA and a 640. The other post has good info, and I can tell you one other difference: The rear fenders are different. The fenders on the N series are not the same as the 600 and 800.

Phil,
What is the difference in the fenders? I would be interested in comparing.

The NAA does not curl over the tire as much.

Sounds similar to the Jubilee I purchased. The grill, nose peice and emblem were not original, appearing much like your description of a 600 series. I have the foot rest tool box but the top had been replaced with sheet steel - no diamond plate pattern. You have the engine serial # indicating a NAA. There are additional casting numbers you can use to determine what you have. The following are what I found on my 53 Jubilee:
Engine casting numbers: EAE 6015 – F (134 cu in Red Tiger engine) Transmission casting numbers: 2 SH014 NAA 7006 B
Hydraulic cover: NAA 478 B
Hydraulic Case: NAA 024 C 25 H 016
Differential – “Trumpet”: NAA 4013 8-66

Although a lot of the parts are interchangeable bedtween the NAA and Hundred series, it makes life a lot easier to know exactly what you have and the mechanicals are what you need to be concerned about. Hope this has helped...

Greg,
I will compare the numbers to the ones you provided. I do know that the block number is the same on this tractor. Thanks for the help.
