I was running the tractor, 1963 4140 HD Industrial, pretty hard today moving a pile of dirt up a hill. After about 4 hours the tractor started to over heat. The aftermarket Gage was only reading 190 degrees, but when I stopped the tractor I could hear it hissing and the overflow was spitting.

Looks like I should have spend the extra $$ on better quality gages. Even though this one was from FNH...

Ran the tractor back to the shop and found that the radiator was blocked with leaves, dirt, oil, dirt and general stuff. A quick spray down with some grease cutting stuff and a hose off and it was back to running cool.

Still PO's me that the gage is more decorative than useful. Oh, and the fuel gage is only reading 1/4 tank --> after filling it up. Pulled the sender and the float isn't. It's sloshing full of diesel. Rat's.

Trouble usually comes in 3's, what's next?

Make sure that the water passage way is not pluged. Pull out the sender bulb and poke around in there with a wire to clean out any dirt. Could be that the water is not getting to the bulb. If I am changing my antifreeze I will pull the sender and any other plugs in the water jecket an let them flush out the block. I will even put a garden hose in the radiator and back flush as much as I can out the block holes. I have changed many freeze plugs that were totaly pluged on the inside with dirt. This can also cause the engine to run hot.

Do you have a thermostat in the engine. The engine can run uneven temperatures in different parts of the block and water moves thru the radiator too fast to cool properly.Use a meat thermometer to test the gauge in some hot water.Test the temp in the top tank with the meat thermometer.Dont jump to conclusions when troubleshooting. The best cooling system ever made will over heat with trash covering the radiator.

Don"t forget your float. Those things are fairly easy to solder once you find the hole. Get the fuel out first.

Is the charge system working well? ( correct system voltage? )

Soundguy,

Yeah, the alternator is working correctly. All 3 wires hooked up and it is providing 14.5v when charging.

However the water temp gage is the bulb type. No electricity needed.

Oh well, more maintenance time to balance off the seat time!

If the water temp gauge is the bulb type, it really makes a difference where it is located, as well as how far deep the bulb is inserted into MOVING water. Take the thing out and put the bulb in a pan of boiling water. If it reads 212 (near sea level), there's nothing wrong with the gauge, and everything wrong with the way you're locating it. Read the instructions carefully.

Found the 3rd Thing... in reply to Bern, 10-03-2006 12:52:17

I was moving dirt again today, this time with the Kubota as it is much more stable on hills. Anyway, Right when I get to the top of the hill I am making, about 12' high at this point with a slope of 35-40 degrees, the box blade drops down.

Uh oh. I get off and find that one of the 3pt lift arms has come off of the lower link. Walked back around and found the pin, but not the hair pin. I keep a selection of pins, clips, bolts, nuts, tools and luckily hairpins in the tool box. A bit of leverage from a long pry bar and back on it went.

Bern, Thanks for the tip. I do think it is in far enough. The bulb is a bit longer than the original and there is just the supplied adaptor used to screw it into the head. It's a 172D, the bulb is in the right side, far back location of the head just in front of the battery tray. Is there a better place to screw it in? I can't seem to recall there being any other location used. Lemme know!

Thanks,
jb

Sounds like you have it in the right hole. As long as the majority of the bulb is in MOVING water (i.e. not in a dead spot such as in a long adaptor pipe/bushing), it should be accurate. Check the gauge in boiling water as discussed earlier. Mechanical gauges are usually pretty accurate.

seems like almost everything is more decorative than usefull. i have an aftermarket temp gauge for my 1973 ford 4000 and it does not read accurate. i checked it against a temp probe gauge and the electric unit is way off. it's all this global economy parts from foreign countries where quality control is nonexistant.

Probably the ammeter or the charging light, which ever you have. Lets hope it is nothing else.
