Looking for a power steering cylinder off a ford 700. Are they available? I am looking to adapt the cylinder to another tractor.
Thanks,
Bill

Bill:

Unfortunately, PS cylinders for 7xx-9xx tractors are not available either new or rebuilt anywhere. Making matters worse, most of the used cylinders are not serviceable due to rusted cylinder shafts, which destroy the shaft seals within a short while.

I understand that the going rate for a good used one is around $500. Some folks buy a complete salvage tractor in order to get one.

Richard:

PS cylinders for 6xx and 8xx series tractors are available aftermarket. These cylinders once cost nearly $300 but are comming down in price. I do not believe that cylinders for the less common 7xx and 9xx series tractors are available anywhere, which is why good used ones are so expensive.

Please post back if you find a source for these. I'm sure that many of us would be interested.

Dean,
Just curious. What's so special about the PS cylinder that makes people buy an old tractor to get one? I would think that given a spec for bore & stroke, one could be found that could be adapted for the job.

jml:

The cylinder is part of an assembly that includes the control valve; somewhat similar but smaller to the assembly used on the later 3 cylinder 4000 tractors. It is unlike most slave cylinders.

Though the valve can be removed, the cylinder itself is welded and cannot be rebuilt without cutting it open.

Though the shaft seal is available and replaceable, most of the shafts are badly rusted because the tractors have been exposed to sun and rain for long periods without regular use. Replacing the shaft seal in a cylinder with a badly rusted shaft is a $40.00+ short term repair.
