we are thinking of buying a diesel Ford 3000 with 3 pt live pto,ps,bucket,4500hrs, 8forward & 2 reverse, (1976?)and generally appears to be in excellent condition. Price $6,100 incl. an old brush hog ( in WA).
What we would like to know more about are:
1)are there any issues with these type of transmissions? It's not a stick transmission but has a small gear box with a little lever ... something like a semi automatic. Does that make sense?
2) does the price seem reasonable?

Thanks

Saw one setting in a front yard for sale yesterday - Ford 3000 diesel, Select-o-Shift and hydraulics with 2400 hours. Price was $4300.

Price sounds a little high, at least in NW Indiana. Should be more in the low 5K range. S.O.S = be afraid, very afraid.

Sounds like you've got a 3000 with the Select-O-Speed tranny. That should be a 10x2 unless some of the gears don't work. It's a full power-shift job. Some of us call it the jerk-a-matic.... I'm not a fan. From the little I understand of them, if they were properly maintained, then they worked fairly well. It's really a matter of preference towards that style of transmission or against. I would never take one over a Ford 8x2 "crashbox". Never never never... but that's me. Some folks love them.
The big problem with a lot of them is that they wern't properly maintained. So, I hope you got one that was well maintained. Check that all the gears work when warm; that kind of thing.

The price sounds fairly cheap if the tractor works well. However, the S-O-S factor does tend to reduce the market value somewhat as many people are scared of them. Beyond that, the tractor would be no later than a '75 model, as the S-O-S was phased out with the thousand series in '75. You can look under the hood for the "UNIT" number if you want to get the exact assembly date.

There are also a few S-O-S guru's on here that can give you some invaluable info on these transmissions. Good luck.

Did I read your post right? You said "bucket".... does that mean there is a loader on it? If there is, the most likely the tranny is "beat". Any tractor that has a loader on it gets beat.

If you can, ask to look at the oil fill hole on the right side of the tranny. It's located infront of the oil cooler lines. The oil level should be just up to the bottom of the hole (when warm). Stick finder in oil and smell. If the oil has a burned smell....bad. Very bad. Either the PTO clutches are worn/burned or the gearing/clutch packs.

I don't know where in WA you are at, but in central WA, there is a guy who rebuilds the S-O-S trannies. Search online for D.W.'s Motor Machine, located in Grandview, WA. They sell rebuilt trannies. Pricey (just over 5K), but they are rebuilt and he guarantees them. He's former Ford mechanic who was trained by Ford on fixing the SOS.
