I have two Ford 5000 tractors with the manual 8 speed transmissions with a high and low range, one I bought used, the other my Father-in-law bought used. We have had them for 25 years or so. I bought the fluid to change the hydraulic oil and transmission oil in them, went to my shop manual, and found the drain plugs pictured. It also pictured the plugs that are removed to check the level of the fluid in each, but neither tractor has them where they are shown nor anywhere else I can find them after going over both with a fine tooth comb, so I resorted to draining and refilling with the amount of fluid the specs indicated each uses.

Can anyone tell me where the oil level plugs are for these two items? They are both 1971 or so models, by the way.

My 75 model was a common sump unit, and the 'fill' plug near the clutch pedal on my unit was just a flattened boss.. never drilled. I ended up using the rear diffy pipe plug as my overall fill indicator.

Not sure about the 71 models. perhaps rick .. one of the super knowledgeable guys here can help you. he sure helped me thru many of my '5000' questions.. especially before my set of manuals arrived.

That sounds like mine. Neither have a check plug for the differential or tranny that I can find, although there appears to be one on the left side of the PTO housing on the very rear of the tractors. And the best I can tell from the manual the transmission and differential (which is the hydraulic reservoir, as well) on mine are separated by seals. The manual recommends a complete change annually or every 1,200 hours, whichever occurs first, so I guess they figure that takes care of it. The hydraulic system takes 33 quarts and the tranny 12 quarts of the same spec oil and it isn't that hard to change, although it leaves you with a lot of used oil to dispose of safely. Any idea what the square plug is on the side of the PTO shaft housing?

That big square plug is the fill indicator. Add oil till it drips from there.

On my unit, the manual also showed seperate sealed sumps.. however.. someone pointed out that since I did not have seperate fill indicators.. i may have the common sump unit.

Easy way to check was to drain and remove all plugs, repalce diffy plug.. and then start filling the diffy sump. Observe the other plugs.. if they start pouring oil out after a bit.. then you have a common sump machine... I did.

Though i'm not sure when the changeover actually occoured.
