OK so I'll start this by saying I probably have too much time on my hands. About once a year I get the new tractor fever, followed by the sticker shock syndrome. While bush hogging last week I started thinking how great it would be to have live PTO and slower ground speed.(NEW TRACTOR)(Sticker Shock)Then I get out my manual and start looking at the clutch section. Change the tranny to a five speed w/the dbl clutch and you get the live PTO. Can't add the Sherman to the 5 speed though. Swap or build an input shaft that fits the 4 speed so that it works w/dbl clutch and sherman? I know all this sounds like a lot of trouble and expense, but have you priced a JD, NH, Kubota or Massey lately.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll check around for one that has the features you mentioned and maybe give the 841-D a rest.

A trans with a Sherman does not have a input shaft. The Sherman is the input shaft.

And a live PTO trans has 2 input shafts.

For this reason a Sherman can not work with live PTO.

The only way to have live PTO and gear reduction is by putting the gears after the PTO splits off.

Now if you could find a way to install a Everett trencher transmission or a Howard gear reduction unit that went on the back side of a 4 speed trans to a Live PTO 5 speed you may be on to something.

Sell your tractor and buy a 1965+ 2-3-4000 with a 8 speed trans. A lot less headaches.

I agree with the others...

Either get a 5spd with double clutch.. or get an 8spd.. that gives you the low gears like a sherman would.. only better pto speed vs ground speed.

It's hard enough to convert a 5spd single clutch to double.. but what you are talking about will be alot of machining and fabricating. Just find an 8spd with ind pto.. and you will be set.

I bought a 5000 for less than 7000$ it's alot of tractor... Has ind pto, power steering, and 8spd. A 4000su would be a good smaller option..

3930, 4630, 3910, 4610, or a 4600SU. These can all be had in good shape for $8000 to $12000. The 4600SU for a bit less.
Any of em are twice as much tractor as a new "Boomer" for half the money or less.
Ever time I get into making big changes on a tractor they's allways a $1000 widget or two I didn't figger on.

Well that's my opinion anyway.

As Fordfarmer said the live PTO parts will not fit a 4 speed.

Live PTO on a 5 speed is more than just the double clutch in front of the tranny. If memory serves there are something like 17 different parts in a live PTO 5 speed as compared to a transmission PTO 5 speed, as well as the double clutch.

If I was you, I'd look for a similar tractor to what you have, but with either an SOS or 5 speed double clutch. You could either trade or buy and sell the one you have on eBay.

As far as I know, the required parts for live pto won't fit in the 4-speed, and you already know that the Sherman won't fit in the 5-speed. Have you priced a 3-cylinder 2000, 3000, or 4000 lately? There are some around that are real good deals. I've got about $4500 in a 3000 diesel that runs great - just needs new rear tires. Am going to add power steering, too. Find one with the 8-speed and you have live pto (or possably independant on a 4000 - even better!) and enough speeds for about any job you can think of, and great reliability.

We had an early model 800(850) with 5spd. and single stae clutch. We looked into changing to 2 stage clutch and live pto. No can do on that tractor. Mabe one could install a newer back end with the live pto and make it work. We purchased a later model 2000(3 cyl.engine, ipto and 4x2 tranny with 2 stage clutch.
