Boys, I am buying a little 25 acre farm and the current owner wants to sell me his Ford 4000 gas tractor. It is a 1963, 4-speed, (no high/low) no power steering, tires not new, but still good for years, engine rebuilt about 6 OR 8 years ago, runs good, no smoke, good hydraulics, new gas tank and decent sheet metal and paint. He only uses it to mow. IS THIS A GOOD YEAR FOR THE 4000? WHAT IS A FAIR PRICE?
Thanks for your help.

About a year ago I bought a 861 w/ ps, 2 sets of remotes and as you know 5 speed & lpto needing rear tires and rims for $2500. I thought the price was fair both ways.....

In my humble opinion, a 4 speed 800/801/early 4000 tractor is worth between 2 and 3 grand in an as is state, and 3 grand would be working pretty damn good. There's just so much more tractor out there for the money if you look around....

I'm a little surprised that it doesn't have either power steering or a five-speed transmission. The lack of power steering is no big deal, because the PS is usually shot on these tractors and expensive to repair.

The lack of five-speed is a big negative; it will not have live PTO. Still the four-speed transmission is preferable to the disreputable Select-O-Shift. I'd say around three grand would be a fair price.

I would try to determine the condition of the brakes; if one side or both is bad I would try to knock him down on the price. Also, look for evidence of oil leaking from the rear axle seals (dirt around the wheels and brake drums). Not a big issue, but it does take time and money to fix.

I just purchased a 1974 4000 8 speed today for $4000. The metal is in good shape, it could use a paint job although the paint as is is not too bad. The tractor starts and runs fine with no smoke that I saw. The three point hitch will leak down about 3 inches in about 20 minutes

I will need about $650.00 worth of rear tires, I don't know if that will include installing the liquid.

I see the same ads, but what I wanted to know was what you Ford guys thought the tractor was really worth. Asking prices are one thing; a fair price at which these things change hands is another. Thanks anyway.

Jerry;
I don't expect to recieve any thanks,
it is not necessay.
I feel that most of these prices are from dealers and would be somewhat high.
But it is nice to see your tractor
is worth a lot.
Unfornutely, I can't list the site as
there is filters that block.
t
ractorhouse dot you figure the rest.

This is an updated 801 tractor based on year, and options.. etc.

2500-3500 would be my guess.

CityBoy:

Based upon the information that you have provided, this 63 4000 is probably worth between $3,000 and $3,500.

These are decent tractors but with a 4 speed it does not have live PTO. This is very handy for mowing. It also lacks power steering.

About a year ago I bought a 64 4000 with PS, 10-speed Select-O-Speed transmission and independent PTO for $3,250. My tractor also has a dual remote hydraulic valve, adding $250-$350 to its value.

I would offer $2,500-$2,750 to see what the owner says.
