The 32$ for the dipstick actually didn't choke me up too bad.. it was the 8$ fibre gasket that went down rough.

I pretty much expect to drop 20$+ on any 'metalic' part i buy for a tractor.. I figure that is the cost of playing the game... But heck.. 8$ for the gasket? I could have bought 2 rolls of gasket paper at napa, and made a hundrd of them with an exacto knife! Oh well.. it was a special order item, and I wasn't sure of the price so ordered it. I can still eat and pay my bills, so no point in complaining too much.

Soundguy,

Did you get the new gasket in hand yet, or is that the old one pictured? Reason I ask is because most of the new gaskets I've seen for those fill caps are actually a copper ring now rather than a fibre gasket. That would add to the cost.... Can't argue with you though. It's still expensive. That's why I call 'em the Italian mafia....
On the other hand though, if you think of all the time and money that's spent by NH in sourcing these parts, identifying them, packaging them, placing them in inventory in a warehouse, then distributing them to a dealer who again places the stuff in inventory..... all the freight charges and hands that move it at the intervening stops..... and then the manufacturer, NH, and the dealer all take a slice of profit off it... It's no wonder it costs what it does, and a wonder it's not more. I hate paying these prices, but I imagine it could be a lot worse..... Anyone who thinks NH is bad should try Cat on for size. I remember being quoted nearly 3 grand for a new starter.... over 2 grand for their rebuild.... over 800 for the armeture I needed, which was on a slow boat from Singapore.... I went to Parts For Trucks and got the armeture for 124, off the shelf, and another couple hundred for labor, bushings and brushes to have it rebuilt.... I seldom feel too bad with NH.

The new washer looks virtually identical to the old one. It is a thick fibre or phenolic washer.. rigid.. say.. 1.5mm thick. I also half expected a copper one.

I agree with you on cat parts. The GC I work for runs alot of cat stuff. Some of the prices for that yellow iron is just outrageous!.. and JD is worse...

Hey, I just paid CNH $12.00 for a brass bushing for the distributor. Ouch! Paid $1.65 for a simil;ar one locally. I needed a choke return spring for the carb, only $20.00. Is it a racket or what???

If the choke spring on your carb is the same as the one on my 640, you can make one. Get a piece of music wire from the hardware store for less than a buck, and go for it.
