I want to be able to push a lot of snow this winter. My set of double ring chains from my retired tractor won't fit the 16.9 x 24 tires on the 4000. Should I consider the duo-grip, which have chains on an angle to keep the chain up on top of the lugs, or any other type of chain or just buy new double rings like I'm used to. Does anything work better than the double ring chain??

I myself live in NY too. We have many sets of chains, double ring and field (duo-grip is LaClede's name for them). We also sell them at our farm supply store. I don't believe one to have any better traction than the other. From what I observed from selling them, it is all what is in one's mind to believe, and "This is what my father used." Double ring will clean the best, while field are smother on the road.

I talked to the LaClede rep, and he told me the double ring chains are higher because they don't sell that many. He said they are most popular in NY, PA, and surrounding areas. Other than that, they don't sell that many of them.

Hay Bill make up your mind yet? Here's my 2 cents.
I'm in the same situation as you in need of a new set of chains and am also another upstate NY snow plower. I've plowed mine and the neighbors road with my 3000 for about 15 years now. Love my double rings but have the slip RWK mentions. After looking at cost, design ect. of whats out there today I'm gona go the RWK route. Turn a four link set of DBL O's in to a two link set. Doubeling the cross links to keep chain on the ground! I believe the DBL rings clear mud and snow the best or I would consider other designs. AB

AB, yes I have decided on a plan. I have ordered new Duo-Grip chains from tirechains.com. I plan to add double ring cross links (from my old set) and should have the best of both worlds. They will be heavy too. I'm in Cicero. Where are you?

I'm down here in Endicott. Are you sure ya can add the DBL O's in between the duo grips? I considered that but it looked to me like there wasn't an open side link in the picture? I could easly consider that option again but it looked like you'de be taking hold of the wrong link. When you ordered did they add shipping on to their advertized price and if so how much was shipping? Let me know how ya make out..... .. AB

Hey Bill!

As a fellow upstate NY'er I do a lot of snow plowing. My neighbor and I share the driveway job, it's about a quarter mile long. It is very steep and winding with a gravel surface. And you KNOW how much snow we get here!

RWK is very pleased with his double O's, but he didn't mention his surface. I suspect in mud there would be a big difference with double O's, but my neighbor has a Case with double rings and my Jube has duo-grip. I can't tell ANY difference in basic plowing, even up hill. But there are two differences that convince me to stay with duo's 1) he side slips a lot if there's ice on the road, I don't.

2) in spring, when the road is starting to thaw he really tears up the gravel, the duo's don't.

Last year I asked for opinions here in this forum and got a lot of input, form both sides of the argument. Good luck.

I have 2 Ford 3000, one with duo-grip chains and the other with double ring. The difference is umbelievable. The double rings can walk away from the other tractor. One thing I have doubled the number of cross links on the double rings - using the skipped link on the side chain. Works bettet and rides better.
This year I am going to modify the duo-grip so that two sets of cross chains start from one attachment link so I get closer spacing.

Good luck with your plowing.
