I have a 1950 Ford 8N..Power steering, front loader, dist. is on the side.
The engine will idle, but when there is a load put on it, such as letting out the clutch, raising the loader or even giving it more gas, the engine will sputter and die. I have cleaned the carb bowl, gapped the plugs and points. Any help out there?
Thanks, Ken

It could be a weak ignition, but I think it sounds like a lean condition. Possibly fuel flow or carb adjustment. Another possibility is a leak in the intake manifold. When the motor is idling, spray a small amount of ether around the intake manifold studs and gasket. If the motor RPM speeds up, you have an intake leak. This will cause low vacuum causing your tractor to die.

Re: Engine, its yer GOVERNOR !!! in reply to Ken Pina, 11-12-2006 10:19:42
Ken..... ..surprisingly enuff, IT AINTCHUR CARB, its yer GOVERNOR. Governors are supposed to open yer carb throttle when yer LOAD demands more power like letting yer clutch out..... ...Dell

Check to make sure that you have a good spark. Itshould be a fat, bluish color. Anything else like orangey or yellow is poor.If you have a poor spark, check the primary ignition circuit for the cause (i.e. dirty or maladjusted points, loose or corroded connections, bad ignition switch, etc.). Next make sur ethe timing is correct and the timing advance mechanism is working. If the ignition is up to snuff, then look at fuel delivery system to make sure that you have adequate delivery to the carb. If you do, then try to adjust the power jet on the carb. Do these things one at a time and retest after each change. Record the results. If you don't know how to check the systems out, then get back here and we'll help you.

You may want to see what the governor is doing as well. It may be sticking open and flooding the engine.

You don't mention having tried adjusting the main jet (load adjustment), and what effect that had???
