Gas 3600 Another problem-Starter

Thanks to help here, I got my 3600 running great, but it still made a bit of a grinding noise when I started it. Now I only get the starter spinning and does not engage. The New Holland Mechanic said it sounded like the Bendix had gone, and told me to bring the starter in to have it bench tested.

I have searched a lot of postings, but still need some advice. Is the Bendix actually part of the starter? Can it be replaced separately or do I need to replace the starter? New Holland wants $321 for a starter, but I saw one here for $99. Is the one here ok? Finally, any tricks I should know about for removing the starter? Any other advice would be appreciated.

I believe you can get a rebuilt one at your local auto parts store for less than $99. Just take yours in as a sample to be sure you get the right one (tooth count on the drive, etc). I've done this before (same starter as some Ford cars and light trucks of that era).

It may be a bad bendix or maybe just a dirty bendix. Remove the starter and the bendix. Clean it and the shaft good, grease it with a lithium grease and reassemble. That's just about free and may give you years of more service. You can also get a new one from this site as listed, but be sure you count teeth and measure gear diameter.

Otherwise, I would find a dedicated starter / alternator repair shop and have them work on it. Make sure you don't swap it out!!!! It will have better windings than any new one (from China or ??).

I wouldn't want to say for certain just what you need. I do know that a 3600 gasoline will have a bendix sytle starter, which is basically the automotive STYLE starter. You would need to be very very careful in ordering parts, either from NH, or this site, to make sure of what you're getting. There are 4 or 5 drives alone for the Diesel straters, never mind throwing this gasoline variant into the mix. The gas and diesel have 2 completly different starters. Again, excercise the utmost caution in what you order.

You would also want to use caution in testing that starter, as I believe the bendix can unwind in them... The problem you're having could be with a bad bendix or a bad ring gear on the flywheel. If the flywheel looks chewed up, then that may be the problem... Otherwise, I don't think that starter is too hard to remove. You may need a a couple wobble extensions to get the back bolt out. I use a 3/8" drive socket (9/16"). The wobble extensions give enought slack to get around without the problems of a u-joint. HTH.
