Several 3000 questions

Hi guys I am seriously considering buying a 3000 diesel. Tractor is cosmetically beat up. Needs seat, front grill, etc, but runs like a top with 4500 hours. 2 wheel drive, no power steering, decent tires. Comes with box blade, 6 foot bushhog. Guy is asking $3000. Good price?

Does it have a block heater and where? Doesn't seem the glow plugs are working as I got it started no prob back in the summer, but not yesterday. It was low in the 30's and 50 when I tried to crank her. Maybe after a battery charge it will crank as it wasn't real strong.

There is a fuel lever just under the throttle on the dash. Which is open, in or out?

I would want to fit it with a loader and powersteering. Difficulty and cost of doing each. Thanks guys.

My 3000 has had a FOrd loader on it since it was new without a problem other than replaceing the bolts occasionaly. Just remember it is a farm tractor and not na industrial and don't beat on it. If you were using it every day that might be different.

I would not recommend a loader on a 3000. The front end was not designed for that kind of heavy work. A 4000 or 5000 would be better. I bought a MF30 industrial rather than screw up the front of my 3000.

Only thing I have to add is the fact that in order for these diesels to start, they have to get to a crank speed of 200rpm.

$3000 for a decent runnng diesel is about average, that being said, if you are looking for a loader tractor with power steering I think you can do better. You will have a minimum of $5000 in this tractor with 4500 hours on it. I would look around, this is a good time of year to buy. My 2 cents Dave

Questions - what year is it ? and is it a UK or US build ?

I've had two UK-built 3000's, a '65 and a '67. Neither had any kind of glow-plugs or block-heater. The '65 has a cold-start device on the injector block, but the '67 didn't. Provided the battery is good, either will start eventually if cranked long enough, but the '65 with the cold-start device is definitely better. The pull-knob under the throttle is for stopping the engine, pull it out to stop (and push it back in afterwards, it's amazing how long you can crank the engine before noticing its still out...)

The 'cold start device' you are refering to is called an 'excess fuel button' by Ford - works similar to a choke on a gas engine. Tractors with in-line pumps have them; rotary pumps do not. I don't know why both rotary and in-line pumps were put on 3000's, and I have never been able to see that it matters what year or if they are U.S. or U.K. built as to which pump they have. My 7000, 7600, TW35, and the 380 c.i. Ford industrial engine in my combine all have in-line pumps with the button. Helps quite a bit.

Some early CAV rotary pumps had an excess fuel button which had to be pushed sideways to operate. My 2700 series engine has one.

As to the cost and difficulty of adding a loader and power steering... there are loaders available, probably $500 and up for used, depending on how basic or nice you need/want, and at least 2 types of aftermarket p/s systems. I recentyl bought a $450 kit for my 3000, but haven't had a chance to put it on yet. This type is much like the factory 4000 setup, but most loaders won't work with it, probably becasue of their front brackets interfering with the tie rod. Another type of aftermarket system thats meant to be compatable with loaders uses a steering motor - it's a hydrostaic system, and runs $1000+. A few people have taken factory systems off parts tractors and put them on their tractors, apparently with good results.

Look around on the intake manifold for a "Thermostart" device. This will involve a fuel line and an electrical connection.
To activate, turn the key counterclockwise one notch, hold there for 15 seconds then turn another notch to crank. When it's running move key to the normal "run" position.
There may also be a button on the injector pump called the excess fuel button. Push this before trying to start in cold weather.
Do not use starting fluid AND the Thermostart at the same time or KABOOM!

I noticed that you still have an unanswered question. Namely, the fuel lever under the dash. I am assuming that is the fuel stop to turn it off. (No expert on the 3000 here!) Usually they are in to run and out to stop, you will have to check by watching it operate. First move the throttle to 1/2 way then watch the pump linkage as it is moved to idle speed. Then move the fuel lever and the way that moves the pump linkage to a lower position than idle is usually the stop direction.


And I think 3k is a decent price for a good running tractor with no smoke and a trans that is good. The attachments are a bonus.

in is run; charge that battery and give about 1/2 throttle to start cold; I don't think there are any glow plugs, but 30 isnt that cold; my 4100 fired after a night of 15 degrees no problem w/o pre-heat or any assist

Yeah apon further reading I dont think it has plugs either. Is the idea that if you crank it long enough the cylinders will heat up enough so the fuel will burn? When I start it I put the key in the run position for 10 seconds or so then crank it? Just like my truck. Is this correct?

If it doesn't have glow plugs you don't have to ut it in run position. Just turn to start and crank away. You may have to add a block heater to an older tractor.
