All,

I have a 1966 Ford 3000. In a previous post (see TWANK message below), I was having problems with a 'twanking' in the engine followed by rough running and generally bad sounds.

Initially, I thought I had a bad connecting rod, then using metal tubing, I was able to listen and locate the sound to the head.

I finally got the tractor broken in two as I needed to get to the head. When I got the head off, I found the main fuel jet had become dislodged from the carburetor and ingested into the intake manifold. This is a brass nozzel.

Is this a 'replacable' part, or do I really need to get a 'new' carburetor?

If it is replacable, what is the best method?

If it is not replacable, would it be better to get a Zenith or an original 'rebuilt' carb?

Any input welcome and needed.

Michael: When you said you got the tractor broken into, I hope you didn't mean split into. You don't have to split a 3000 to remove the head.

Well, I do have the tractor split in two.

It turns out that having it separated is a blessing.

Initially, I could not get the head off, because the air cleaner housing was in the way. I found out after I separated the tractor that I could have removed the four bolts holding the air cleaner housing and it would have been removed. (I have a learners permit.) Now that I have it in two, I found the clutch plate had separated from the center bearing, so I need to replace the clutch as well.

You will eventually be better off changing the carb to the Zenith completely but depending on the budget funds you can probably buy a rebuild kit and get this part. However you need to figure out how the other one got loose since than is a fairly hard thing to do. The biggest problem with those Holley's is the aluminum body wears and they just can't be rebuilt. I have a couple of friend in the tractor mechanic business that claim they get less than a 50% success rate on rebuilds and they have quit rebuilding. The tractor will get harder and harder to start and eventually it will just be a royal pain. Should have changed ours years ago but never dreamed that a Holley carb was that bad. They are in this application.
