I have an 8N Ford tractor 1950 model that has a big knob on the dash that runs a cable going into the bell housing. The cable runs into a box attached to the wall between the bellhousing and the transmission. Does anyone know what this is ???

PROBABLY a (common)Sherman 'Step-UP'(overdrive) but if you're a REALLY luck sort, it'll be a(RARE) Step-DOWN(UNDERdrive) and worth big buck$$.

Go to John Smith's 8N Tractor site and you will find everything you need to know about your Sherman auxillary transmission. If your cable is frozen inside the casing, soak it in PB Blaster to free it up. New cables are in excess of $100, so if you can save your old one, you'll be ahead of the game.
