I have 2 Genesis tractors in that range. Did you know they were designed by Ford before the buyout by NH? They are fuel efficient and beautiful tractors to operate.

Larry,

I wouldn't disagree with you that they are a nice tractor. However, from what I've read, the P396 project (Genesis) was the first major project approved by the Fiat board after the buyout. It was actually turned down by Ford first, and then approved by Fiat. That's what I read anyhow.

Yeah i knew that the Genesis was probably the best large tractor Ford put out before the buy out. Nice tractors I've never driven one but been inside the cab beautiful.

Couldn't say. I've had a TE20 since '47, an MF135 since c. '69 - and a 6600 for about 3 yrs. I've put them in order of preference - 'course, none of them are in your hp bracket, but that brings me onto my second comment - only tractors in this area (of any hp) are green - must say something.

Probably says the JD dealership in that area offers the best service . . . either that or everybody has tunnel vision.

Hard to beat an 8700 or 9700, they run forever.

We also had an 8700 for many years. We overhauled the engine (new engine upgrade through Ford) at around 5000 hours. Only major problem was the aforementioned PTO strip and the occasional cracked fuel lines due to plugged injectors. We had a 7000 that was equally as trouble free. We used em hard and were always pleased with them.

9700 is nothing more than an 8700 with a turbo...I would go that route if you could find one, added HP at little extra cost.

Don't know much about the bigger ones but the 5000 and its close cousins are pretty bullet proof. Guess you have to try harder to stir us up.

Jim,

From what I've seen of the 4440, it's certainly a fairly reliable tractor. Beyond that it leaves a lot to be desired in my mind. I choped silage with one a couple years ago, and I found I was forever clunking through gears with the power quad. I do't know what all the rage is with them. I'd much sooner the 16x8 syncro in my 7710 as it's a much more efficient utility type transmission. The other big downside to that green monster was it's monster fuel tank, and the monster appetite that could empty it. Watching that thing fairly closely, it took over 8 gph to feed it. The Ford I've got is turned to around 100-105 hp and will get by on 4. Everybody I talk to complains about the fuel efficiency of those things. Reliable it may be, but a good tractor overall.... not to me.

Rod,you must not have read my last post. I was ribbing Ben Goober because he came to JD forum trying to stir up something. Granted JD's do seem to like more diesel than other brands. I've never driven a 16X8 syncro so I can't comment. I do know for me JD quad-ranges shift easier than 86 series IHC's. As stated before I owned a FORD TRACTOR also before it burn't(no pun intended) and I looking for another one. Tx Jim

My dad has had a Ford 8700 on the farm since 1977. It now has 11,000 hours on it. The engine was overhauled at around 7000 hours. It had given my dad very little problems and can pull a 24" IH flex gang disc with 9" spacing in light sandy loam soil. In fact it still has the origonal injector pump on it.

This was our main tractor on my dads 400 acre dairy farm until we aquired a TW30 3 years ago. The TW30 has proven the same reliability so far. Our ony backup tractor was a Case 1690(JUNK, SHOULDA SANK THE BOAT THAT BROUGHT THESE OVER FROM ENGLAND) and a AC WD and WC

The only weak point that I know of was the PTO drive spline on the back of the engine for the live power has a tendancy to strip out. This was fixed with an upgrade to larger shaft which we haven"t had a problem since. The dual power is very durable and has never been touched either.

It needs a paint job and a new cab interior but these are general maintaince problems
