Hello all! I'm told this tractor is a Ford 861. I can't seem to find any markings that I can use to make a positive ID. The transmission is broken? It starts and runs, but will not move.

I have some pictures of the tractor, click the link to see them.

Thanks!

Paul

Hello Bloomlake, Without seeing the model number and serial number stamped on the flat surface just behind the starter on the trans. which will not be a problem to read because the Loader is a Factory Ford unit and does not interfere with it I can tell you this, The Ford loader is a 1957 or 1958 design because of the early pistons and lack of oil filter, The tractor is a 1958, first year of the diesel and only year not having the S.O.S. pto handle mount in the sheet metal on the right hand side, The tractor will part out at least $3000 - $5000 depending on condition of parts not including trans. The loader, Power Steering, Three point hitch will bring close to $3000 alone and you will still have the Diesel engine( Crank alone is worth almost $500 )Sheet metal, Power adjust rear Wheels, rear end assembly. So yes it is well worth $2000. $500 tractors were common 20 years ago when I first started parting them out, I could even buy tractors with Elenco 4x4 units for a $1000 or even less but it won't happen anymore. Thanks Tony Jacobs

Paul:

This looks like an 861/851 (most likely 861 from the angle of the clutch pedal) with partial 8x0 sheetmetal.

With full power loader and power steering it should be worth much more than $2000 in parts even if the clutch and/or transmission is/are worthless.

It's either an 851 or 861. The model and serial numbers are stamped into a horizontal flat pad near the starter. It's going to be a little challenging to see them with that loader in the way.

Thanks Jim. Is there any external signs of a live PTO? The tractor is 80 miles from here, and it"s not mine (yet).

Any clues about the trans issue. The owner said they tried to pull start it. After that, it wouldn"t move. I don"t hear any noise when the clutch is released. Maybe the clutch facing is spun off??

The way the clutch pedal is sticking nearly straight up I'd say it's an 861. There are 2 settings for the clutch pedal on an 861. With the pedal set to activate both clutches it sticks nearly straight up. If you are not using the PTO you can pull a pin in the linkage and reset it which will allow the pedal to drop down towards the running board at a 45* angle which makes it easier to push on but it only activates the transmission clutch in that mode.

If someone tried to pull start it and the trans no longer works you could be in for a big expense. The dual stage clutch assembly is about $400 rebuilt and $800 new from NH for parts only. If something got broken inside the trans there's no telling what the repair bill will be. Without knowing what's broken I wouldn't pay any more than salvage value for the tractor- $500 or so for the tractor and another $500 for the loader.

Thanks, he was told it was an 861, but ya never know.

I think I can get it for $2,000, but I"m having trouble getting the funding from the boss. Seems she doesn"t like broken tractors as much as I might.

Thanks for the advice!

Paul

$2000 might be a little much for it. Not knowing if its tranny problems or a clutch problem you could get $4000-5000 tied up in it fast if it has a bad tranny in it. Now if its a clutch problem and if you do the work your self you will only be out another $200-500. I'd say more like $1000 for it as is

Shoot in my area they sell all day long for between $2500-5000 and thats in working order. Shoot I picked up tractors like that one for less then $500, maybe thats why I have 30 plus of them LOL. With it haveing tranny problems its not worth more then $1000 if even that much. I know I wouldn't pay more then $1000 for it and thats if the tires are very very good, I'd be more likely to pay maybe $500 for it

I dunno OLD, they sure go for good coin up here in Michigan. My dad has a 9N, I was thinking of fixing it up as an upgrade. diesel, live PTO, remotes, etc.

Right now theres an 801 don't know what model it is but any how its listed for $2900 and thats at a dealer so you know he has it priced a little higher then you could get it from a person. And thats in good working order since I know the dealer and he always runs them in to the shop before he sells them to make sure all is well
