I like my SOS 4000 in reply to catfih, 12-21-2006 17:41:23
I traded a old car for a '62 4000 diesel w/SOS/power steering . It had the torque limiting clutch out. Had to find good used disc and split tractor. I rebuilt engine while I had things apart. I think I got a pretty good tractor now. I like the 10 speeds of the SOS, the lowest makes a good tiller gear. Anything used is a gamble. If you do a little research you'll find favorable reviews of the later SOS tranny's. bjr

Ted:

If you decide that you do not want it, and it is anywhere near Cincinnati, I'll buy it sight unseen.

As you have already read, most folks are afraid of the S-O-S but I am a fan. Late model S-O-Ss are bullet proof.

In my area a 4000 is the most unwanted tractor there is and with an SOS its even more unwanted. Sounds like it would be a money pit and that pit may not have a bottom to it. Now for $500 it be one thing but for that price I would keep looking and run don't walk away from that one, unless you have a lot of money you want to maybe throw away, and even then $2500 is about $1000-2000 to much for it

Where are you located? Ohio and Michigan are two places with well respected SOS rebuilders.

Usually the SOS is fairly simple & cheap to fix when it just stopped moving. rebuilding the SOS is expensive. Big difference between fixin a problem and rebuilding the whole thing. That said, a non-mover is a safe bet at $1k but 2.5k is sorta high unless everything else is nice. It could be just the traction disconnect that is the problem, can you move the tractor?

Don't walk away from that tractor.
Run!
There are several guys on this board that are very good at fixing those transmissions but to the majority of us, Select O Speeds are as Winston Churchill so succinctly put it, "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma". That said, if you happened to have a parts tractor and could rob all the tranny and parts you need to switch it out to a geared tranny then you would have a very good machine.

SOS transmissions are expensive to fix. What price does she want for it?
