After owning a ford 8n for 10 years ,three farmall's and owning a 951 for 3 years. I still can't belive the 900 (or any hundred) series did not catch on any better than they did. Power steering, good gearing, great ground clerance, good operator position/platform, and plenty of power from the 172ci red tiger, great power to size ratio.... This tractor never fails to amaze me with its abilities. The only thing I wish I could change is the turning radius. With the wide front end stuck out there in front it don't turn as sharp as I would like. (you can't have everything.) I am sure there is a better tractor out there from that era but I have yet to find it. I wish I could find a cheap diesel, live pto model near by. to fix up.

I just thought I would post this after a week of pulling logs out that the farmall M wouldn't with loaded tires and all.

I live in North central Mo. Today I think it is supposed to get to the low 40"s. I just bought a 60 inch finishing mower at a sale 3 weeks ago and I want to put it on my 971 -Diesel today and see how it works. Above 40 it will start by using the glow plugs only. They are a fun and easy to drive tractor. I guess if it doesn't start I can always put it on the 2-N, it of course just doesn't have the live PTO. Have a great day. B. Jones

I've owned a 971 and a 950, and they impressed me also. Both were sold to help cover bills... the 971 about 12 years ago to the grandson of the original owner (and now to someone in MI) and the 950 at a consignment sale this fall to someone in Alaska! I've also owned an 850 and a pair of 860's, but its the 900/901/4000 that I'd like to buy and hang onto some day...

If you convert your wide front end to narrow, your 951 will turn in its own length (if the brakes are up to snuff).

I have a row crop 4000, basically the same thing as a 961. It's a good tractor, for sure.

To the extent of my knowledge and experience, Ford tractors equipped with the 172 cu. in. engine are likely the most powerful tractors ever commercially built in regards to weight/power ratio. My all time preference of the Fords is the 800 series that are equipped with live power. In the late 50's to early 60's I have often wondered why any body would consider buying any thing new other than Ford or Massey Ferguson.
