help!!! i'm trying to help my dad get his tractor started.i took a quick look and noticed the new battery he just installed was hooked up neg. ground. according to the research i've done so far all gas tractors of this vintage are to be hooked pos. ground . he tried to pull it to get it started but gave up when oil started pumping out of the air cleaner!! what electrical components would get shorted if any because of the wrong ground connection? how about the oil pumping out of the air cleaner? any advice on checks or procedures for this dilemma? thank you!!

Don't assume that negative ground was wrong. It is true that the tractor came from the factory with a positive ground. However, a 12 V conversion will convert it to a negative ground to be compatible with modern alternators. If it has a 12 V system with a one wire alternator (typical for most Delco alternators with internal regulator), changing back to a positive ground with "blow" the regulator. Tractor has an oil bath air cleaner. Backfiring or pulling the tractor in reverse would blow this oil out of the air cleaner. I would check the ignition system first to make sure you have spark. Failure to start is usually caused from a no fuel condition (carburetor problem) or a lack of spark (points, condenser, coil, ignition switch).

david, thanks for the info. the tractor is still a 6 volt system but by the looks of the "scratch" marks in the turf i'd guess dad had selected the R instead of one of the forward gears when they tried pulling it started. it has good spark at the plugs but when checking this a mist of fuel was spewing out every time the piston made its full revolution. after noticing this i checked out the carb to find gas basically running on the ground from the carb. i'm glad they gave up when they did! i'm guessing the float is sticking. any ideas? thanks again!

If you are getting fuel, then check for spark. You only need 3 things to make any gas engine run- fuel, compression, and spark. If the tractor ran without major problems before, then it is highly unlikely that you dont have compression. take the spark plugs out and put the wires on and set them where they are grounded( on the block) look for a nice blue spark.
You have to really watch the old detroit and caterpillar diesels when you are pull starting. They will run backwards, I started a Cat D6 backwards once, it was blowing smoke out the air cleaner and sucking air through the exaust.

LOL Yea a Mack Engine is another great one for running backward, The detroites also used in my book be called engine with a mind of its own, start running away from itself.
