It has always been my understanding that the horsepower rating on a brushcutter gearbox was for determining what PTO horsepower the gearbox could handle. I was told yesterday that this was not the case. Thoughts?

Y'all boys are getting it right. Not only mower gearboxes but any gearbox, transmission, rear end, front end differential is rated by the engineer as to how much HP---torque it can withstand. A lot of factors considered, ie, pressure on the gears, grade of steel in the components, bearings, steady load, shock load, cooling provided, and the list goes on. To the average order taker even this brief explanation could very well be above their comprehension.

Max PTO horse applied to the gear box.
I always find it interesting A lot of sales people do not know their product or care as long as they sale is completed especially if they work on commission.

According to my ford, KK, and Howse mower manuals.. the gearbox hp rating is the max recomended hp that the box can handle...

I agree with Dean. The guy at tsc may never have even touched the fender on a tractor.. or if he did.. it had pedals and handlebars...

Bama:

You have been right all along. Gearbox HP is the continuous power that the gearbox is designed to handle.

Keep in mind that the sales person at your local TSC or whatever, probably does not know this and may have never sat in the seat of a tractor.

That said, a 5' cutter with a 40 Hp gearbox is just about right for your 660 unless you use it mostly in rather light conditions.

A final thought: I have always thought it better to have a mower gearbox rated less than my tractor rather than greater. I would much prefer to break something in the mower gearbox than in the tractor transmission.

Dean,
I think I agree with you, I would rather destroy a gearbox then a transmission.

My comment was more around the person that buys the king kutter 40hp brush hog then straps it to an 75-80hp tractor cutting 1-2" all the time. Then they say what junk it is when the gearbox explodes all over the place.

I was pricing cutters and called a KingKutter dealer. I told the salesperson I thought my 660 had about 32 HP at the PTO, and thought a 5' cutter with 40 HP gearbox would be all I would need. They replied that the HP rating of the gearbox had nothing to do with the tractor HP at all. I was pretty much stunned at the reply. They said all that number was used for was determining what you were going to cut with it. In essence, that is sort of true, but I still think it's based off the tractor.

Bama,

Who told you that and what did they say it was for?

I also agree with the others, a 60 hp gear box can safely be operated by a 60 hp tractor.

Thats what I was always told. HP gearbox rating is the largest tractor you should hook it too. Probably wiser though, to have a gearbox rated bigger than max tractor HP.

Thats the way I have always understood it also. If the gear box says 45HP then its rated for a 45HP tractor or smaller.

Then, do I have a problem with a 5 foot King Kutter 40 hp gearbox on my 850? Seems to do well.

Well with an 850 your still with in the 10% plus or minis so ya your pushing it some but not all that bad. The 850 is rated around 44HP so your not off the make by much

Thanks old,
I keep a close check on fluid condition and levels in the gearbox, and I probably stress the tractor way more than the 'hog (although sometimes I stress myself more than either, on slopes, LOL).

Yep slopes can and well get you hurt or dead. Any slope its good to go up them or down them but never along them. It took me and a friend 2 or 3 days to get an 8N off a tree where a guy drove along a slope and slid into a tree. The guy got lucky he hit the tree or he would have been under the 8N and brush hog
