I have a 1985 Ford 1710 4WD tractor. The "range: gear shift is stuck in a gear (I think it is 2nd gear ??). I have tried pushing a shoving on the gear shift but it won't release. Can anyone recommend some things I could try?

You might note if the TX is a 12x4 non-synchromesh or the optional 12x4 synchromesh TX. The synchromesh TX has the range shift on the TX cover and the other gears on the steering column. The non-synchro TX has both shifts on the TX cover.

You might try rocking the tractor a bit in gear-trying both a forward and the reverse gear on the column. You might also try disengaging the 4wd and lifting the front wheels with the loader bucket. I'd also ensure that the clutch pedal adjustment is OK, and there's not excessive free travel. It would be a good idea to note if the 4wd and the pto are easy to engage and disengage.

It's possible that the problem is that the range shift forks got out of coordination. It's possible to correct similar problems by manually moving the forks. I'm not sure, but the forks probably are accessible if the TX case top cover is removed. However, doing anything like that shouldn’t be done without a manual and basic mechanical experience.

Thanks Tom. It looks like I have the non-synch TX. I managed to fix the problem just by loosening the bolts on the TX cover. Apparently this problem occurs occasionally and the previous owner told me about lossening the TX cover bolts.
