Dual power was a planatary gear set that was a 2spd powershift. It could be shifted on the fly. The Sherman was an auxilary transmission that was in the same place as the Dual power is on the new Fords. Does the same thing, but the Sherman cannot be shifted on the fly. I am not sure if it is a sliding collar or a sliding gear, but it is one of those, not a planatary gear set. Hope this helps

Well, you now know what DP is. ( I didn't before!)

The sherman transmission is one of about 4 flavors of auxilary transmissions that fit into the bell housing behind the clutch on Ford tractors. They can be 1:1 and 50% Underdrive or 1:1 and 50% Overdrive, a combination of 50%over, 1:1 and 50% under. The last is a reversing transmission that reverses the direction of the input shaft. It turns a 4 forward / 1 reverse transmission into 1 forward / 4 reverse. Sounds goofy, but is great for lots of forward and backward activities like forklifts and loaders. Also good for posthole diggers. If you hit a root and screw the auger in the ground, you can power reverse it out.

John,

Sherman also made a 9.25:1 'Extreme Step-down' or 'Creeper'. It used the same case and handle as the Combination so you guys out there thinking you're looking at a Combo handle need to run the tractor thru it's paces to make sure you're not passing on the find of a lifetime. A 'Creeper' can bring as much as 2.5K from the serious 'slow racers'.

Dp means Dual power it is a transmission used on Fords such as the 9700 Tw-15 Tw-20 and other 100 hp range tractors.

Not just 100+ h.p. I have a 7000 and 7600 with DP, and have seen 5000's and 5600's with it also. Also, Dual Power doesn't affect the pto speed like a Sherman does. All DP equiped tractors have independant pto. DP was only available on 8-speeds when it was Ford, later NH tractors may be different. I think Shermans were only on 4-speeds.

The Hupp is similar to the Sherman except the handle is on the right side under the steering arm .Some have over, under and direct drive so the pto will slow down to 540. Dad put one in our TO 30 Ferguson when it was new so it would run the combine.
