I have a 1959 SOS, the early design with the over running clutch. Does it have a filter inside the transmission, other than just the screen filter around the drain plug. I am pretty sure the later models had one but do the early ones have one also. Thanks, B. Jones

B:

Yes. Your SOS has a small oil filter beneath the top cover unless it is one of the very first and has not been dealer retrofitted.

This filter is rarely changed because most current owners do not know it is in there. As a result, most are in full bypass all of the time resulting in no filtering.

You must remove the top cover to change it. If you have not done this before I suggest that you do yourself a very big favor and buy a proper SOS service manual and follow the instructions precisely.

Be very careful with the selector cable parts as there are very expensive and some are no longer available.

I am working on a 1960 901 (Model 971) with the SOS. I have purchased a transimission filter that is found under the transmission top plate. From the manuals it appears these filters are designed to flow through even when completely plugged. I've not got a chance to change it yet, though I have removed the PTO and shifting cables. There are a group of very knowledgeable guys who will respond shortly and are very helpful. If you do change it let me know what you find.
