Looking at a 1955 850. Are there any weak points to look for? How about any quirks particular to this modle?

Andy

Check the transmission and make sure that it doesn't "jump" out of 3rd gear. I bought a 850 last year and it jumps out of 3rd. I didn't think it was that big of a deal but now I know that I need to overhaul my transmission. This appears to be a common problem with the 5 speed transmission.

I purchased my 850 w/ front end loader two years ago. It has the little "quirks" Mike mentioned but it still works around the farm doing everything I ask of it. Someday, would like to find a nice 861 and then retire and restore the 850. My buddy owns old Deeres and we pick on each other but mine easily does the work his does. I am still learning about this tractor.. but I think it is pretty dang cool!

Make sure the BRAKES WORK, then try to operate the tractor downhill in each of the 5 gears at quarter throttle to see if the transmission will pop out of gear(common on well worn transmissions). Also see if the three point hitch arms raise all the way up and with some weight(push down on arms)make sure it does not hick-up(up and down movement). If the arms won't raise all the way up, a pin is worn under the cover the needs to be replaced along with a possible freeing up of the linkage. Hickups meen more work under the cover. You will probally(50/50) have the Vickers hydraulic pump on this year 850 and it is hard to find parts for it. All said if it is at a reasonable price, check over carefully and even if it does have the one of the above problems take in consideration reducing your offer by 500 bucks or better to fix it and you will still have a fine unit. If you buy it and use it with a bush-hog, get an over-running clutch for the PTO(search the archives and you will know why). Good-luck.

Like what Mike said, make sure you install an over-running coupler. When you push the clutch in with a brugh hog running, the momentum of the brush hog will cause the tractor to continue to move. Be careful.
