900 manifold washers?

I am going to install my new intake/exhaust manifold on my 55 Ford 960 (172 gas). The studs are 1/2 inch. What was between the nut and manifold? I"m thinking a 1/2 in hardened SAE washer went against the manifold and a 1/2in lock washer went on top of that, and then the nut. Is this correct? I looked at a couple other 800 and 900 series tractors and they seem to only have the 1/2 in SAE washer and no lock washer. Does anyone know what it was supposed to have?

the subject of A flat washer with a lock washer on top. The lock washer will only lock the nut to the flat washer. Nothing to lock the bottom of the flat washer to the manifold. The nut will back off when the nut & flat washer turns togather from the bottom side of the flat washer.
A regular lock washer will not lock a Left hand nut in place.

I wonder why you would not use lock washers? I had a vacuum leak one time on this tractor. I thought it was the carb. I struggled with it for awhile, then finally rebuilt the carb. It was better, but then started acting up again. I took it apart again and made sure I didn"t have some debris in the needle... I fought with it for a whole season of mowing. The next spring it started acting up again. I started mowing and when the engine was finally fully warmed up, the engine would die and not restart. Choking the heck out of it would help. Then one day while sitting on the throne it hit me, it"s a vacuum leak. When I choke it off, it brings the air mixture closer to correct, but the vacuum leak is too big to stay running. When the engin is hot the leak is worse. Turns out my manifold was loose. That simple. After torquing it to spec all was fine. If I had lockwashers would the manifold have come loose? perhaps if you did have lockwashers it would restrian the manifold too much and as it heats up and expands, may crack the manifold. Probably not, but just a theory why they might not have. Thanks all.

Brad:

I believe that the 172 engine manifold studs are 7/16". There is a flat washer beneath the nut. I do not know if it is hardened but it is not a standard 7/16" washer as it is thicker.

I do not believe that a lock washer is used but am not sure.

I use brass nuts but another good solution is stainless steel nuts and anti sieze.

Brad; My Parts Manual calls for a 7/16 flat washer and does not mention a lock washer. Part # 351428-S. To confuse things the diagram makes it look like a lock washer. My 172 had lock washers on it but I think is had had some work done on it at some point. Hope this helps.

My plan is to use stainless nuts and antiseize, but should I use lock washers or not??? Is there a negative to using the lock washers?
