Dave:

I have a 64, 4000 utility with 172 CI 4 cylinder gas engine and SOS transmission. It is a good tractor and I like it for many jobs.

The SOS transmission can be expensive to repair but so are the 5 speeds. Like the others have already said, the later SOS transmissions will hold up well if the oil and filter have been properly maintained. Unfortunately, many have not been well maintained and the transmission will be worn over time if the oil becomes dirty.

Many of these transmissions work well when cold but problems appear when hot.

Before you buy it try to get it fully up to operating temperature and make sure all gears and the PTO work well under load at low engine RPM. Temperature and RPM related problems indicate pressure problems often due to wear.

I prefer either of my SOSs for many jobs but either of my 5 speeds for other jobs.

The SOS in that tractor is the later version. It should be good to go, provided it"s been cared for properly.

Well, it's held up for 40 years so far. Do you think any of the Kubotas,Yanmars, Belarus, Hochopotoes, etc. will be around to ponder about the wisdom of buying in 40 years? Like any of the old stuff, past maintenance and use determines more than opinions. New stuff will cost more and not last as long. You heard it here first.
