Bob, Try and look up my responses to other 8N problems on this site, some may well help. I have worked with 8N's since 1960. First thing, try and see if the distributor shaft is worn. Simply remover the cap and wiggle the shaft. If it rattles, or moves at all the buching is worn on the distributor shaft. This affects the gap of the points making it random, and affects the timming, and the dwell angle. It makes them run terrible even when everything else is fine. The distributors sometimes had a brass bushing that wears easily. They installed an oil drip snout on the distributor shaft which should be oiled daily, or prior to each use, to lube this bushing. Most don't oil this enough and the result is the bushing wears out.

Hope this helps.

Could be many different things causing your problem. The carb could need cleaning, could be plug wires gone bad, or maybe an adjustment is needed on the large screw on the carb. Try reposting on the 9N, 2N, 8N board. There's several very knowledgable guys there that can tell you more than I can.
