I looked at David Brown tractor yesterday..... I believe it was a 990. Ran and sounded great. Any owners or former owners among our elite Ford ownership?

Is it black and white or orange and white. I love them, only tractors I like better are 1210 Case/David Browns. BUT>..... . I sold my last one a few years ago to complete a change out to Fords. The hydraulic systems on the DB's are like brain surgery, and everything on them is behind something else. Took me 6 hours of taking parts off from front to read to change an o ring in the back end. Parts are super expensive and hard to get.

Thats why I slowly replaced my line with all 7XXX series Fords. Parts bill went from just over $10,000 a year to just under $4000. Fuel bill increased by a third though. Thats the best thing about those tractors, they just barely sip any fuel at all. Oh yeah, the electrical systems are a definite 'heart of darkness'.

Dont walk, RUN AWAY FROM IT! Farmed with a man that owned a DB 1200. Parts were expensive and hard to get 20 years ago. Not real nice to operate either. He commented several times that he wished he bought a Ford 5000 like I had.

I don't have any Brown's, but there's certainly been a number of them around here, and still is.
They were a good tractor in their day, but perhaps had a bit quirky hydraulic system. Overall, a good tractor. The main problem with them today is getting to be parts. Case NewHolland (Fiat) is very very good at "organized" obsolence, and Brown was one of the first victims. That actually goes back to the CaseIH days....
Other than that, the only real reservation I'd have with the 990 is that it probably didn't have a strong a bottom end in the engine. I've heard of a fair number with crank failures. That's not taking into consideration how some of those failed ones were used though.... I also know of 1 or 2 with handy 10000 hours service, and no engine work.
For light use, and not working it every day, I'd think if it's in good shape today, and needing nothing, you'd be OK. If it needs stuff, then you would do well to price out and check availability of parts before you buy the tractor.... HTH.

All I can tell you about David Browns is what I know about a nieghbor's... efficient, not quite as handy as a similar size/age Ford, and hard/expensive to get parts for.

I think Case bought them out....but don't know about how similar they are. I looked at photos on this site earlier.....but that's as far as I have got. I like my 5000 for sure, but saw one at the New Holland dealership yesterday.....just asking around.
