I have a 1975 Ford Model 2000, 3 cyl. gas with about 2100 hours on it. I have had an extremely hard time getting it to start since I bought it last spring. Since that time, I have replaced the spark plugs, wires, points, and condenser, rebuilt the Holley, bought a Zenith carb and replaced the Holley. I had a Ford shop tune it.
Last month same thing, can't get it started. A mechanic came out, did a few tests and claimed I had a weak spark. He cleaned the points, and it fired up. I ran it for about an hour. Now four weeks later, can't get it to start. It is kept in an unheated garage and I have put Heet in the gas. The gas is relatively fresh. It is at a farm I only get to about once a month. Anybody have any ideas?

If the choke is not adjusted to close ALL THE WAY, it certainly will cause hard starting and the colder, the worse!

My 2000 3 cyl 1075Hrs was getting to be a bear to start. While layed off this summer I tore it down to change water pump. While the loader was out of the way it seemed like a good time for a tune up to.Adjusted the valves which had been clicky for a long time. Points, condensor, and timed it even. What a difference! Never did get to the carburetor rebuild like I was going to. Did take time for a touchup and even waxed it.

If you are near the ocean or other salt water environment you must clean ignition points regularly. My boat engine and tractor that have ignition points must be cleaned after not running them for a couple months. If I don't clean them on a regular basis the engine will begin to miss. The electric horn on my boat has a small contactor in it. I even had to clean that contact to make the horn work after sitting for about six months. If your tractor starts OK immediatly after cleaning the ignition points you have found the problem..

Are you near SE Wisconsin? If so is it for sale??! But you may want to check for oily feel in the distributor cap.. Seems like after the points are cleaned it runs for awhile. Does it turn over fine when it "doesn't start?" I cleaned points and reset them on a unit of mine but then just repaired the oil seal that was leaking fumes into the points after I got sick of cleaning points all the time. Even just a little oil film will stop the spark. I also had one that had a wad of debris in the last 90 degree fitting on the fuel line as it went into the carb. Cleaned out the wad, it got gas and has run fine ever since. Also 'old gas' is a common culprit. Fresh gas, and a spark at the right time and it should run. Or is starter causing such a drain there is none left for the coil. Do a carbon pile load test- this will check batt and gen. Or test same by pulling it and seeing if it fires right up. Before spending a lot on money on parts, CLEAN ALL CONNECTIONS.. I have repaired many situations with a wire brush on cable ends and battery posts.

We have a 3000 (also w/a Zenith) and I've noticed the same thing if it isn't run every couple of wks. Even put an electronic ignition on - it runs cleaner - but some starts after long sits are still hard. It seems like it floods easily and then won't clear itself like a cranked engine normally will (and the battery/starter combo are marginal). In worst cases, have had to resort to just a whiff of start fluid - bad stuff, I know, but it doesn't get much, nor need much to get it going. Will be interested to see if others have seen this, too. BTW, recommend the electronic ignition. Was worth the money & time to install.

Another thought: Float level. Right after we put the brand-new Zenith on our 3000, it was a bear to start warm or cold. Took it apart and adj the float to sit a bit lower (maybe 1/64") and it became much easier to start...still hard to start after 3 wks of sitting, but fires right up anytime before then. This matched similar experience w/a single-thumper Gravely. Maybe I'll tinker with it a bit more.

BTW, think about "lower" before you try this. Since the upper portion of the carb body has to be upside down to measure float height, "lower" is "higher" on the measuring stick. Also, be smart and write down the original float level setting, in case you need it again. Don't ask how I know this.

I have that same tractor - about a 68 or 69 though.
Had about the same # of hours too.
When I bought it about 4 or 5 years ago I put that Petronix electronic ignition in it.
Since then I've put about 300 hours on it and it starts instantly every time. It wasn't cheap - I think about $125 - but as my friend says you can set em and forget em.
Maybe something for you to consider?
