I have a 4000 Idustrial diesl 63-64 that I just picked up a couple months ago. It initially ran and had most of the upper gears and reverse. The fella I bought it from indicated the higher gears didn't work, I think he said 7,8,9,&10. I never tested it myself. It has been sitting inside while I adjusted the injection pump and basically rewired the whole thing. Now that I have it all back together and the engine starts stops, and operates as it should, IT WONT MOVE! I depress the feathering clutch and shift it in to gear(any gear), it does nothing. The fella I bought it from said somthing about replacing the shift cable and never adjusting it right! I just ordered some gages to run through the entire adjusting and checking process outlined in the shop manual. Any thoughts On checking something specifically based on it's history? Should I start the adjusting while waiting for the gages? I also have a new filter that came with it and the fluid is full and looks clean. Thanks for reading this far and I look foreward to your thoughts!
Vince

Re: SOS stopped working update in reply to uporbust, 02-26-2007 18:32:27
Hi fellas and thanks for the info, keep it coming. Yesterday I changed the trans filter and found what I can only desribe as something akin to peanut butter at the end of the intake tube. There were also signs of water inside. The old filter was also installed in reverse. I set the unit to park by making sure the kill switch was engaged, put the cover back on and measured the cabe 2 3/4" and reinstalled the selector. She still won't do anything when I shift it. I am thinking that the fluid in the tranny might be wrong and to thick to pump through the system as it is pretty cold up here. I plan on putting an electric heater next to the tranny and covering it with a tarp to heat it up. Can I use regular hydrolic fluid in it if/when I get it warmed up enough to work? I have the original ford shop manual and the IT shop manual, both are quite usefull. I drove it on and off the trailer, just never tried the other gears as the injection pump was out of adjustment and I coudn't run it properly. Thanks again
Vince

awhtx brings up a good point about the disconnect. When you said you never tested it, did you mean you never drove it or never put in the bad gears? In other words, did you drive it on or winch it on the trailer? If it can be towed with the engine off, it is dissconnected.
Dean has a good point about adjusting the shifter. Without that you will have a hard time figuring out the problem. It only involves a tape measure an a few hand tools. Get a repair manual.
If none of the above are the problem, pull the cover and make sure none of the valves are stuck. They are spring loaded.

Up:

If the tractor operated in some gears at least when you brought it home your problem is almost certainly not the torque limiting clutch.

Your plan to use your new gauges to check the servo pressures is a good idea but you should address the selector question first.

Since the previous owner said that he worked on the selector but did not properly adjust it, this must be done first.

Do yourself a very big favor and buy a proper SOS service manual covering your particular model before attempting to work on the selector. Some selector parts are no longer available from CNH and are very expensive if available used.

Adjusting the selector is not a difficult task if you have the proper manual but the procedure is not intuitive and you can creat expensive problems if you attempt to do so without knowing the proper procedure.

Once you have the selector properly adjusted you should adjust the bands and check the servo pressures.

That was me a year ago in reply to uporbust, 02-26-2007 18:32:27
I got almost the exact tractor. Mine did not move either. Mine was the torque limit clutch. Had to split the tractor. It's a small, 7 inch or so clutch plate that is right behind the flywheel. I didn't have any pressures because nothing was turning, when I hooked up the gauge in any gears. I had to get a used clutch plate. There were a couple different spline numbers so count the teeth if you have to get one of these.

Get a manual you'll be glad you did. Also theres a release lock on the left side just under and rear of the seat. This releases the rear wheels so the tractor can be move when engine is dead. I found out a little late about this on the SOS. We had to skid the tractor up on a trailer. Keep us informed of your project bjr

If you have moved the tractor with ... in reply to bjr, 02-26-2007 18:59:10
the engine not running and the rear wheels turned then your disconnect lever that bjr mentioned is in the "freewheeling" position. With no hydraulic pressure present the SOS goes into Park. If the engine is not running there is no hydraulic pressure in the SOS and the rear wheels are locked.
