"75 Ford 3400 with hard power steering at low rpms. Turns when I rev up the engine or go faster and reduce the load on the front tires.

Seems that I have lost some psi in the power steering pump and now the oil is leaking at the top of the steering shaft/right beneath the steering wheel. I have the shop manual, but do not know where to start (pump, gearbox, or the hydraulic struts.) I pulled the tractor apart last year to sandblast/repaint, so I am fairly familiar with it.

Thanks for your help,
Bill

In all the thousand series and up tractors you are suppose to use 134d hydraulic oil. Or whatever hydraulic oil you are using in the rear end, this could be causing you leaking and your hard steering.

TxFarmer84,,,Thanx for bringing that up...The 134D oil will work just fine...Back in 1975 when that tractor was built, is seems everytime I turned around, I was resealing the powersteering on a late model tractor...We partially blamed our Minnesota cold weather operation as a contributing factor to blowing out seals....This issue was hashed over quite well when I attended one of the weeklong Ford technician training classes in early 1975..The general conclusion was to reseal the shaft, and use M2C41A fluid...This was a lite fluid, and worked quite well up here...There are several fluids were used with success, included was automotive steering fluid..But, down in Texas, you folks may have never run into this problem...(lucky bums) The 134D fluid, with it's modern day refinements, can replace several of those older classifications...The seal failure in that tractor is undoubtably due to old age and lots of use...that tractor is 32 years old.....

Bill ...There is a filter in the pump cannister on that tractor which maybe is overdue for replacement....As far as the leak goes, it sounds like youre due for a seal kit on the steering shaft.....Simplest way is to take care of these two things first, in that order...I could go into allot of detail for checking this entire system out,,,but from what you have explained,,I doubt that you wouldn't see a major improvement by doing these two procedures..BDT

BDT,

Thanks for the tips. I did wind up replacing the power steering filter last year (visible with the fluid filler cap open). Also drained/replaced the fluid with automotive power steering fluid. Would a different fluid be better?

I will get the steering shaft seal kit installed and see how things go.

Thanks again,
Bill

The fluid that you are using should be just fine...At this point, I would go ahead and reseal the leak..
