I have fuel dilution in oil. I was wondering if there were needle valves in the injectors that could be leaking. I shut of the fuel at the tank at night but the next morning I get lotsa smoke for the first few minutes then it clears up. I rebuilt the engine but didn"t mess with fuel system. The local injector place want $$$ to do anything to injectors or the pump. bjr

Dear bjr, I also have one of those engines in my tractor. I first put the umbrella seals in and that didn't do it for my tractor. I didn't have too much trouble getting the valve cover off. You have to work it around some but still not too bad. I think I had to turn the motor over once so it would clear one of the rocker arms that was raised up. I finally bought a new return line that connects to each one of the injectors and put on new copper washers. I think my line had a slight leak. Anyway it is doing well now. That seemed to be my leak. I would sure look that line over real well. B. Jones

I'm guilty of the sin of not giving proper info. I believe the Pump is the Stanadyne "DB". It has the shutdown electric Solenoid. I also, have Touchy throttle problem. I mean I have limited travel between idle wide full open. I don't have any make or model on the injectors. I remember a small tube going thru the side of the head, injector return line I think. Working the cylinder head area won't be fun with fuel tank directly above the valve cover. I don't know if the valve cover can be removed without removing hood assembly and tank. Are the injector rubber plate seals that go on the side of the head available aftermarket or new old stock somewhere? bjr

The valve cover can be removed without disturbing the hood/tank, but it is not real easy. Don't get a bunch of crap onto the rockers, etc. Throttle response issue sounds more like a governor ring problem; internal to the injection pump. Electric shutoff is non-original to that tractor but common enough on later Roosa's. Maybe the pump is not spec'ed for the tractor? That may not explain gaining fuel in the crankcase.

The pumps seals are available at a NH dealer and are easily replaced. I have had to replace the return rail assembly on two tractors to solve oil dilution problems. The rail is available from NH for around $140. When replacing the rail make sure to use new washers on the hollow bolts. Also replace the rubber seal where the return assembly goes into the cylinder head and make sure to remove all of the old seal.

Search the archives for roosa master in reply to bjr, 03-02-2007 14:45:00
and "roosamaster" and you'll find lots of information on the fuel-in-the-oil problem.

It's more common that the pump is leaking into the crankcase. The pump drive shaft can be removed and the seals changed out. They are 2 umbrella seals and one O-ring all available from FNH and pretty cheap. You do have to pull the pump off of the engine to do it, but it's pretty simple.

Don't be so sure. The return line set is a known problem area as is the injector pump shaft seal. Leaking injectors would be third on my probable guess list.

I Agree, Rick..If the injectors were bad, the tractor would not run worth a crap..period
